The crazy little story in this book has become one of my 6 year old daughters favorite bedtime stories. The first time we read through the book I was thinking to myself "where is this story going?" as it seemed to meander on, but in the end it all came together & the surprise ending of this young lady turning down a marriage proposal from the king in order to go on an adventure of her own...well that was the icing on the cake! I couldn't think of a better message for my little girl. The story is fun, wide spread and full of twists and turns AND best of all the main character turns out to be a very adventurous & independent young woman..just the kind of role model I want my girl to be reading about. Two thumbs up from me!
I just bought this for granddaughter to give this Christmas (2018.) I had to read it first to be sure it was appropriate. Well, it definitely passed the test! I was hooked after the first two pages. Wonderful tales that will not give a child nightmares. (If you've ever read the original "Mother Goose Stories"--yikes! Those are meant to scare children!)The most violent thing in this book is a mention of a pig and cow being eaten, but it did not even word it that graphically. (They were gone in an instant.) Wonderful, imaginative tales that keep your interest, along with excellent illustrations.I found the ending a bit abrupt (although most of the tales in this children's book end abruptly, you are immediately led to a new "blarney" tale from the main character's imagination.)I'm guessing that an imaginative child would find no problem with the abrupt ending what-so-ever.
This book is packed full of adventure and lore - definitely a fun read, but probably better for older kids. Mine are 2 and 5 and they just weren't interested in it yet, especially because it's long. I really enjoyed it, though, and the illustrations are wonderful. I rotate books on our mantle for the changing holidays and seasons, so this is definitely a keeper for our St. Patrick's Day display.
I bought this book for my nephew but decided to wait to give it to him for several reasons. The main one being that I absolutely LOVE the book myself! LOL! However, while the story is good and I know he'll enjoy it, he's still a bit young (not even 2); it seems more appropiate for 4 years old or older. In the story, Young Kate uses her wits to save her family and her village with an ending I never saw coming -- not your typical 'Fairy Tale Ending' but an excellent one nonetheless especially for our modern times. I fell in love with the illustration's ton of detail that kept me looking at each page long after the reading was over.My one complaint is that, while the book itself is good sized so you can see the pictures, the paperback edition seems a bit flimsy. If this story is to be loved (and thus read) as much as I think it will then I may have to order another copy or two to last through the years. Perhaps the school binding edition is more sturdy? Both girls and boys will enjoy this story and I think you grown ups will, too.
Much loved by grandchildren on St. Patricks Day. One asked what does it mean to be Irish!Beautiful illustrations and captivating story. A keeper that will be read each year for sur and likely more often.
I bought it as a gift for my daughter's cousin, so I know nothing about it other than I got it and passed it on.
A fine tall tale, however, the narrative is dense for a young child but would probably be fine for an older child (6+ perhaps). While it did not bother me, the story does includes a witch which some folks with religious leanings may find objectionable.
This one is fun to read.
