In short, this book is about a sheep who's desperately trying to get some sleep, but he keeps getting interrupted by various barnyard animals who come to the barn door making noise and waking him up. One by one, he settles each one down to sleep. When they're all finally asleep, the rooster wakes them all up, except for the sheep who is exhausted and sleeps right through the noise. It's got plenty of repetition, so my toddler can chime in all the way through the book. As I'm reading, I get into the sheep character and read him as frustrated and frazzled, and my toddler finds this very funny. It's got lots of emotion, and for a toddler who's been used to books that are mostly serious or happy, this is a welcome change. We've been reading this since my son was about 2, and I have a feeling we'll be reading it for quite a while.Great illustrations too! They do a great job at conveying the sheep's frustrating and the humor in the situation.

I ordered a number of books to go with our farm unit. Little Man is at a stage where he prefers to stick to his favs and new books are not readily accepted. Most of the new ones stay on the shelf but this one he loves. The lyrics are lyrical! Almost like a song. The gentle repetition and beautifully expressive illustrations have wonderful appeal! Wish I could find more books he likes as much as this!

Very cute book. My husband doesn't like to read this one but he doesn't like the rhyming, repetitive, sing-song type books, like this one is. My 2 year old and I both like it though. But again, it is't a story book, but short cute song-like book.

This has become my 4-year-old's most treasured book. We borrowed it from the library, and it became an absolute bedtime staple. I bought two copies, and sent one to a friend. It's that good.I start a bit slow, then build the angst, page by page, animal by animal, until the poor frazzled sheep is sleeping late because he slept so badly. My son loves to watch for the doorway shadow in the book so he knows which animal comes next - and is more than happy to tell me when I skip a page. This is a treasured favourite. I enjoy reading it, he enjoys having it read to him. The cadence and the story are absolutely wonderful. He also enjoys "reading it" to others - but in his rendition, it's the "big red barn, big red barn, farm, big red farm barn". I giggle. These moments will slip away, but I'll put this one on my bookshelf after he's done reading it, just to flip through it and remember.

Cute books but plot line is basically the title of the book. It’s not very creative and has a very slight pessimistic tone which is kind of a bummer.

Absolutely adorable drawings AND a super FUN story to read! It can be read to a large group because each page repeats certain phrases and still has a delightful anticipation for what will happen next! I have read it MANY times to my grandson, and have given it away as gifts.

This might be our favorite family book to read out loud! So fun. And we have purchased it as gifts for several kids in the family.

Love this story, it will be stuck in your head! My LO loves the pictures and trying to guess which animal will come next!

Daybreak Here we are again with another book about a serial killer stalking goose hunters in Iceland. In any case, it's up to two detectives to track him down - Gunnar and Birkir. The story didn't seem to start out that way which was a surprise to me. Then when other hunters were killed, it still seemed to me that there was going to be an explanation. As the story and the plot built, I would say that there wasn't a lot of tension for me. When the detectives were trying to answer the various quizzes that the killer gave them, my interest was fading even more. Usually, I don't quit on a book and I was interested to see what was going to happen. I have to admit that that was when the story really built up for me, especially at the end. I think that as a writer, if you're able to build the mystery up and create a unique type of story that justifies the end, then you did your job as a writer. I really have to give Viktor Arnar Ingolfsson credit for doing this. I was more than surprised on how he built the story up. It really sneaks up on you and I liked the way he did it. The story had great characters and the ending will be a memorable one for me. There were some things left in the air so I wonder if that will be in the next book. It seems like this can be a great series that I will keep up with. I thought by the time this story would be over, I would only give this book three stars. Now that I have finished it, I will give it four stars. I would have given it five if there was a little more suspense in the story. I thought that could have been done but I enjoyed the book enough to say that I would like to continue to read more books by Viktor Amar Ingolfsson.

His four books which have been translated into English are totally different from each other, and totally different from anything else I have read. They may challenge some readers because they don’t follow the usual expectations of character, pacing, clues, etc. - you really don’t quite know where each book is heading for a while. Each is totally rewarding and in my opinion absolutely brilliant - don’t give up! Supposedly he has written six altogether - PLEASE READ SO MORE OF HIS WORK GETS TRANSLATED!!!

I enjoyed this book. It caught my attention from the excerpt read before the purchase, and it held my interest throughout. The writing was a bit matter-of-fact, nothing flowery or fancy, "just the facts, ma'am," kind of writing. The main characters were developed enough to be identifiable, though perhaps their personalities were a little exaggerated: one's a slob, the other is extremely neat and organized. One is fairly compulsive in eating and drinking, while the other is very much in control. Scene description was good: I felt like I could visualize places and persons pretty well. Conversations seemed pretty natural. There was a lot of "thinking" as well as dialogue, so I could get into at least the main characters' minds. Perhaps my only quibble was that the ending and tie-up seemed rather abrupt. It all made sense, but it was just suddenly there, as if the criminal got tired of waiting to be found out and decided to expose h**self. The solution to the mystery was satisfying and unsatisfying at the same time. In a way, it makes me wish for a new novel with the same characters and a new crime, the beginning giving more finality to the end of this book while starting the new mystery. All to say, I did enjoy the book and would read another by the same author.

Here's another of Ingolfsson's gripping novels of Icelandic life. In this one two seemingly ill-matched detectives from the Reykjavik police's Violent Crimes Squad, the Vietnam-born (he is constantly asked, "do you speak Icelandic) Birkir, and Gunnar Mariuson--the one as neat as a pin, the other an unmade bed, constantly munching on snacks and drinking far too much are faced with what seems to be a serial killer killing goose-hunters in remote stretches of Iceland's bleak countryside. That they finally succeed is a tribute both to their fictive skills--assisted by the equally ingenious Dora) and the ingenious plotting of Ingolfsson, who keeps you turning the pages, (and searching the locales on the map of Iceland). Ingolfsson's output translated into English seems to be less than that of other Icelandic crime novelists, but he is one of the best. I highly recommend it for all lovers of tightly-plotted and locale-rich Scandinavian mysteries. You might also want to try his "The Flatey Enigma."

Mostly I'm hooked on Iceland as a backdrop for any literature--the Icelandic Legends, Njal's Saga, Place in the Heart, and then a mass of mysteries of which Daybreak is one of the best. There seems always to be an echo of a grim mythology lurking beneath the surface. The killer's indifference to death in Daybreak and his nature to kill men seem entirely plausible particularly for anyone acquainted with Icelandic lore. British or American writers could not get away with such obscure motive. Good old detective work clears up some crime and establishes the innocence of persons of interest, but it isn't sufficient when it comes to motives buried in cultural mythology. You will love Birkir Hindriksson, the hunter of Gander.

This is a very enjoyable police "procedural". The characters are interesting and the setting -- Iceland -- is fairly exotic. There is not a lot of suspense and little opportunity for the reader to "guess" the murderer; but, of course, that is the general nature of mysteries showcasing police work: new facts are always turning up.Several years ago my wife and I spent a week in Iceland. We thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the people, and this novel brought back strong memories of words and names and places. There is a flurry of excitement at the end, which was well thought out, and perhaps could have been extended a bit more.I recommend the book if you like this kind of mystery, and especially if you have an interest in Iceland.
