My three and five year old granddaughters have really learned a lot using these wipe clean books. They re-work the book every day and I have seen dramatic improvement, especially in the three-year old's control. I recommend.

So I recently bought a bunch of these books for my little over two year old to work on while I started working from home very part time. I needed something to keep him busy that requires minimal interaction from me and isn't just watching a movie. These work well for that. I should also add that we've been using Expo fine tipped dry erase markers and have had no problem cleaning them up with just a dry rag. One of the hardest things I had to decide between was which of these books to get, and since I'm really visual and more of a like to flip through the book first person, I figured I'd post the photos here to give you an idea of what you're getting with this one.One of the things I love about this one in particular is how it really can grow with your child as their skills develop and get better, the images get more complex and detailed, but it starts out very simple and large. My two year old isn't really able to trace stuff yet, but he enjoys doing it with me and watching me and trying to do it himself. He's also learning to color in the object s with these as we learn about borders and shapes. Some of the activities are also repetative as you go along, giving them lots of practice and then buids on their skills later in the book using the same kinds of ideas.Since most of these kinds of books actually focus on tracing activities, I really wasn't sure about this one and if it would be repetitive in our library, but the fact that it takes your child from beginner learner to more advanced has me convinced I made the right choice as a lot of these books tend towards a certain level and don't really take them from beginner to more advanced as this one does.

I bought a few of these books in the same series for my son and daycare kids to get a jumpstart on writing. My 2 year old, who is fairly intelligent, doesn't really grasp the concept of following the dotted tracing lines, and instead prefers to 'color the kitty's eyes' or color in the pictures. My 3 year old loves it though, and immediately understood that we start our marker on the big purple dot, then follow the dotted lines. Within minutes she was doing all sorts of pen control exercises that I didn't know she could do! It really helped her learn the most comfortable way to hold the marker and be able to control it the most, which quickly led to her being able to write her whole name!!!While my son isn't using the book for its sole purpose, he's still learning things, and I know he'll grow into it.I've found that Expo low-odor dry erase markers work best with kids in these books, but make sure you erase the pages everyday!! We made the mistake of leaving the writing in the book for a couple days, and it stained the pages a bit.

Our 3 year old daughter loves to learn and this workbook is a hit! Easy to wipe workbook that allows her to practice tracing. Her favorite part is wiping it clean at the end. I posted a picture of her playing with this online and got several comments of people asking where we got this book.

My daughter loves to practice tracing in this book! I did buy some additional dry erase markers, since they can dry out pretty fast. I will say, if not wiped off right away, it becomes a real bugger to clean. I ended up putting some rubbing alcohol on a rag and it wiped right off. This book has definitely helped my daughter with control when writing and has helped teach her how to make shapes. She's still a bit wobbly with it, but practice makes perfect! I love that it's reusable too, so we aren't wasting a bunch of paper. Highly recommend.

If you have read my other reviews, you will see that I purchased several different versions of the dry erase workbooks for my granddaughter. This one is different than the other two that I bought.First, I must mention Amazon and it's amazing ability to have things arrive at my door almost before I hit the order button. If I had to mention one thing that bothered me about the purchase it's that this was just laying in the bottom of a box that had other purchases on top of it. Because the pages are cardboard/whiteboard, I would have like to have seen it have a little more protection from getting gouged or scratched by the other things in the box. I know that is minor, but the little dings make the book look like it is used already, although it's perfectly clear it hasn't been.I also cannot stress enough that the included markers with these types of books for kids are a nightmare. For one thing, no matter which hand is dominant, when they write or trace their hand inevitably crosses something they've already done, and it smears. So then there is black on the sides of their hands, and it messes up the whole page they have been working on. Add to that the aggravation of their shirt sleeve dragging through smeared black marker ink, and you have a recipe for a laundry disaster. So order the Crayola Dry Erase Crayon set that is around $4 and get rid of the markers before your child sees it, (this is for your own sanity, trust me on this!)I bought this workbook for my granddaughter who is 5. She asked for Santa to bring her books this year instead of toys. Her favorite thing to do now is to read and to do school work. I picked this book because she gets frustrated when she is trying to draw a shape and her 'work' is not quite the right shape. For the intended purpose, this book is perfect. It just helps to round out the fine motor skills required to draw a shape. Plus, if all the work they put in to drawing these shapes yields less than perfect results, they can just erase and start over again.I would think that this book would even be appropriate for ages 3 and up, and especially if you have siblings that include one that has started school and one that hasn't, the older can use this to 'teach' their younger brother or sister what they work on in school. Anything that buys a parent 10 minutes of quiet play is worth any cost, but with this book the cost is minimal!I liked that the spiral spine of this particular workbook is partially covered by the cover, so there is less chance for the spiral to get smashed and inoperable. The spiral is pretty thick and covered with thick white plastic, so there is no exposed metal. All in all, this is another great Amazon purchase, and you can't beat the price!

Shady Retreats: 20 Plans for Colorful, Private Spaces in Your Backyard, by Barbara W. Ellis

From Booklist

An intimate sanctuary shaded from the heat of the sun--Ellis believes every garden should have just such an inviting space, and points the way to creating one regardless of the attributes, or unfavorable conditions, of an existing yard. Whether starting with a blank slate or introducing a renovated area within a maturing garden, Ellis' guide addresses budgets great and small, as well as landscapes ranging from expansive properties to petite lots. In all, 20 garden plans suggest intriguing possibilities, from bringing in a formidable hardscape element such as a gazebo and surrounding it with greenery to inserting a small terrace under existing trees and enhancing it with container plantings. A congenial writing style provides plenty of encouragement, while a final section describes an array of tender specimens, perennials, trees, and shrubs to handsomely furnish the new space. Very good book to inspire you to find a "retreat" in your own backyard to rest, read, or just dream. The pictures and ideas are very inviting. Great book to add to my collection.

Good addition to my collection of shaded garden books.

I LOVE this book! So many designs to choose from. Great buy, gorgeous pictures.

I purchased this book while in the planning stages for adding a Japanese garden in a shady part of my yard. It was very helpful and informative.

Shady Retreats: 20 Plans for Colorful, Private Spaces in Your Backyard"Let me show you my private get-away", said the prospective client when she answered the door. Then, she led me into her back yard, overgrown with wild vegetation, and pointed to a clearing in its center, where slabs of antiquated patio stones paved the ground in the middle of the wild garden. There, she had placed an equally old, glass-topped, black, wrought iron table, with matching chairs. "This is where I eat my breakfast in the morning and sip martinis with friends in the late afternoon", she explained. "I love the sound of the birds chirping and the rustling of the wild foliage when the wind blows".At very little cost, this homeowner created for herself a shady garden retreat, a secluded, private, destination. Whenever she visits that part of her property, she leaves behind her usual routine, enters a soothing oasis, and for the brief time that she spends there, readjusts the pace of her life. Here, she is at peace with herself, at one with nature, and ready to engage in any activity, relaxing or exciting, that brings her pleasure.A shady retreat is in the range of possibility for most homeowners. All that is required is a bit of imagination and the guidance that this versatile publication supplies. With the help of the book's author Barbara W. Ellis, the architectural plans of Julie Burns, and the exquisite painted garden illustrations of Gary Palmer, any part of one's exterior home, no matter how small or large, can be transformed to serve as a retreat. Even a small porch or deck, will do.To help the reader navigate the subject and select a retreat that best suits one's property and budget, the author presents twenty different plans. Each is elaborated in detail over several pages, starting with an awesome, painted rendition of the retreat at its completion. These illustrations give the book a dual purpose: It is both a versatile garden publication and an art book. The illustrations for each plan are enriched with architectural drawings, complete with numerical references that indicate where specific plants and garden furnishings should be placed. A recommendation for suitable plants follows, along with ideas to enhance the basic design. For example, in the first plan, the author explains how a small retreat can be transformed to feel more interesting, deeper, and farther away, by winding a short path out of sight, behind shrubbery and trees.Among the twenty potential areas around one's home that the author identifies for the creation of shady retreats are:- woodland edges, the terrace, a gazebo, a deck in the woods, a pool house, arbor, pergola, pavilion, seating area, a clearing in the woods, and a tree perch. The book rounds out with an appendix listing plants that are appropriate for these projects. Each is described according to its contribution to overall garden design. Where useful, a list of preferred cultivars is included, as well as a short note on the special uses of each plant; some make effective ground cover, while others show at their best when they are grouped in drifts.Storey Publishing prides itself on supplying the public with practical information that encourages independence, in harmony with the environment. This book is a successful realization of that goal. It has been a great pleasure to take this journey into shady garden retreats with the author.

Reward yourself for gardening. Most of the gardeners I know love to get their hands in the dirt and work at whatever it takes to make their garden beautiful. But there comes a time to sit back, either alone or with friends and family, and just enjoy what you have created. This book gives you plans for twenty shady retreats where you can sit back, relax and just enjoy. Each of the 20 retreats is shown in a painting by Gary Palmer (the idea of a painting rather than a photograph is a novel approach and it worked well with this topic) and a detailed design layout is provided too. I would have found it helpful if more construction details were included, but this is an idea book rather than a how-to book. The strength of this book lies in the recurring themes such "Colour in the Shade" and "Ideas for Great Design" that enrich each of the major designs. There are also ideas of plants to selct for each and a goodly list of favourite shade plants at the end of the book. The illustrations throughout the book are right on target with the theme and illustrate ways to incorporate your own requirements - peace? an active area? a working space? entertaining? - into a design for a shady retreat.Definitely a reward book. Every gardener deserves a shady retreat like these.

The majority of my large yard is covered in deep shade. Hence my interest in the subject of this book. It will be my go to reference on planting in these areas. I had hoped it would provide more information than it did, but it is still a very informative book

TF Publishinig does an excellent job of curating quotes for its thought-a-day calendars. This one relies too heavily, in my opinion, on pop-celebrities like Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres, Madonna and such. Not very inspiring in my opinion and very often plagiarized. The border design is nice, but the typography for the quote is very thin and printed i light ink. I frequently had difficulty reading it.I like TF calendars of this kind and have already ordered the 2019 edition of my favorite. But I don't think this one is going to be ordered for next year. But that's my taste. Overall, this is a nicely done calendar.Jerry

This calendar is very difficult to read. The date is white on light grey and the sentiment is written in a light ink as well.

I brought this for myself and a coworker of mine for Christmas, so far I love the calendar, everyday I look forwards to reading a new quote. My coworkers thought on this product was that the quotes are on point and inspirational. Though the creator made Saturday and Sunday together, so only one quotes on weekends, I guess the creator must have thought that you probably don't need an inspirational quote to help you get through the weekend like you do during a work week lol

Because font is in white on many of these it is difficult to read quotes! But can't beat the price!

Wife loves this calendar for her work desk. Sends snaps of each day's positive, uplifting quote. Great gift to ring in the new year

Wish I would have bought it at the beginning of the year. Definitely getting a 2019 version!

My GF Loves it. She loves the quotes and the colors. Would buy again.

Love the quotes and design. The flip side of each day is lined so it makes perfect scrap paper.

My husband and I always use Rick Steve's books when traveling abroad. This book was very helpful, but not my favorite.Positives:1. The walking tours are a great way to get acquainted with the city and pick and choose what you want to do as you go along. You can have a half to whole day of informative touring while spending very little cash or having to pay for a tour.2. The tips about prices and what days to visit things are helpful.3. His hand drawn maps are always great to follow.4. Back ground info about history and different sites is interesting.5. Take his advice about using cash instead of credit! I didn't believe him, but he was spot on.Negatives:1. He focuses too much on art and art museums which can get a bit tiresome.2. He talks down about some of the more touristy sites which are actually quite fun (Madam Troussands, Heineken Experience, Zanse Schans).3. The sections about food and restaurants are really focused on saving money rather than eating well. I don't want to eat in a mall food court just because it's cheap.4. The TV version of this book is also one of his more boring episodes.I would suggest using this for the walking tours and supplementing with Lonely Planet.

This book is great, and you can combine it with the podcasts on his web site to get even more information. We listened to the podcasts about the Netherlands, including the city tour podcast, and subsequently, while in Amsterdam two weeks ago, we followed exactly his city walk. It was well planned and thorough. The next day we followed his walk of the Jordaan District. Again, it was great. We were fortunate to be there on a day with the open-air market was open, so got to have both raw herring and Dutch pancakes on one meander through the market. Our hotel was near the Matterhorn stop on the tram, and his explanation of how to use the tram was perfect. (The tram driver doesn't sell tickets - there is another person in the rear of the car who does that.) With this book, you really don't feel like a total dummy while doing "routine" (to the locals) things for the first time in a new country. We went to a restaurant he named for risjttafel, and had a great dinner. (Now my wife is collecting leftovers and at the end of the week she says she's going to put them on rice and call it rijsttafel!) We took one of the side tours he mentioned - to the Zuider Zee Museum, and were captivated with that experience. A very worthwhile trip. After Amsterdam we went to Bruges, but only had one day there, so did a paid city tour instead of trying to follow the guidebook. In general, the Rick Steves guides are absolutely top notch. Highly recommend. (FWIW, my wife has now decided she likes Amsterdam better than Paris, because of how bike-friendly and walking-friendly it is.)

Rick writes very helpful guides. He gets hands on, and tries everything himself. The guides aren't beuatiful, but the paper quality and lack of color glossy pictures keeps the weight down. We did however get a bit tired of his penny pinching. We aren't looking for luxury meals and lodging, but we are not college kids either. We don't want the drab hotels, and cafeteria style steak and fries kind of meals that he seems to favor. We want to discover a local place that has the kind of traditional multicourse meals Europe was known for. Unfortunately, too many all over Europe have become cheap food factories, that aren't very cheap after all. So the guides are still invaluable for their personal insights. But we now know that you have to calibrate your expectations of what Rick recommends.

This is more than a guide book, this is an actual "tour guide in a book". Whether we were at the Sistine Chapel, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, or even at the Borghese gallery, there was no equal to the exhaustive and interesting information provided by Rick Steves. In fact, we took guided tours provided by the Musei Vaticani, as well as at the Colosseum, and the information in Rick Steves' book compared favorably with both.Numerous times during the trip, total strangers would join us in listening to me read out chapters from this book.At the Casa del Fuono in Pompeii, a local stopped by to tell me he'd never seen any tourist so prepared. And, I didn't have the heart to tell him that all I was doing was read out from the Kindle version of this book.IMHO, this book is a must-have if you are traveling to Rome.I'd recommend getting the Kindle version - which made for excellent portability.A couple of caveats:The chapter on Pompeii is covered better in Rick Steves' Italy 2013.Also, the book tour of Palatine hill is not up to the standard of the others. We kept struggling to orient ourselves according to his map.Happy Travels!

I used this book on a recent trip to Brussels and Amsterdam. This book actually talks about other areas in the BeNeLux region, including Delft, Flanders Fields, Ghent, The Hague, etc., so it's probably worth at least a look if you're not necessarily going to the cities named in the title. This book is up to the usual standards. I am a big fan of Steves' work. Any mistakes I make in my travel usually come from deviating from his advice and instructions. Rick and his partners clearly love and respect these areas and go out of their way to help tourists really experience them. The history sections are always well written and enjoyable. The tips on traveling and getting tickets saves time, time I can spend enjoying the sights. The walkthroughs on museums and cities are really helpful and flesh out the experience. I can honestly say this book enhanced my vacation and that's exactly what I want it to do.That's how I used this book. I didn't use it so much for restaurants and hotels. But for everything else I find them extremely useful and enjoyable to read. If anything, this one just gave me motivation to go back!
