About the Author

Richard Halliburton was a writer, lecturer, and world traveler. He published numerous books in his short lifetime, including The Royal Road to Romance, Glorious Adventure, and The Complete Book of Marvels. Halliburton is known for having paid the lowest toll to cross the Panama Canal, which he swam in 1928, paying 36 cents. Born in Tennessee in 1900, Halliburton died in 1939 as he and his crew attempted to sail a Chinese junk, the Sea Dragon, from Hong Kong to San Francisco as a publicity stunt. The vessel was unseaworthy and went down in a storm, apparently shortly after Halliburton sent out his last signal: "Southerly gales, squalls, lee rail under water, wet bunks, hard tack, bully beef, wish you were here-instead of me!"

I have all of Richard Halliburton's books, including one he signed back in the 1930's. He was an incredible writer describing an incredible time - the Golden Age of travel - when world cultures had not yet been diluted (some say polluted) by other influences. Consider the well-known story of 90% of Hawaiian islanders dying of European diseases their bodies, pristine from centuries of isolation, were not familiar with. If you want to see the world as it was a hundred years ago and read some colorful and often humorous travel writing, Halliburton books are a must. As he put it, “Let those who wish have their respectability. I wanted freedom; freedom to indulge in whatever caprice struck my fancy, freedom to search in the farthermost corners of the earth for the beautiful, the joyous and the romantic.” Since I hate to see the memory and legacy of one of my favorite writer's fading (inevitable with fame, I know), here's a good article about him - http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/last-adventure-richard-halliburton-forgotten-hero-1930s-america-180950164/?no-ist

I read all of Halliburton's classic books about 20 years ago and I figured it was time for a re-reading of them. I just got this Echo Point paperback today and something seemed very wrong. I hunted down my original vintage hardback, and guess what?? The charming photographs that are germane to this book are not included. Those photos really brings Halliburton and his escapades to life. Halliburton is actually known for his zany poses in front of revered sights, but you won't get any of that flavor here. This is a seriously blemished and compromised edition of his journey. Furthermore, this has the audacity to be a rather expensive paperback. I suggest you buy a vintage copy of this book until a complete paperback is published, because this entirely photo-free book will not give you same experience. I'm doing a send-back on this tomorrow morning first thing. Shame on Echo Point.

The Royal Road to Romance Richard Halliburton's first book is considered to be one of the best about travel experiences. I knew his family personally so had more than the usual interest in his life and experiences. He was able to publish several more books describing later travels before losing his life on a Chinese junk preparing to sail in it around the world.

Richard Halliburton exudes genuine passion for adventure and it shows in his writings. He makes geography come alive as he writes of his exciting travels throughout the world via ships, railways, hiking, hitching rides on freight trucks and the like, as well as a variety of other ingenious methods. His vigor, youth and insatiable appetite for discovery make for a superb read all while educating the reader in geography with a little help from a globe or atlas. He travels from New York to Hamburg, the Matterhorn, France, Andorra, Alhambra, Gibralter, Monte Carlo, the Nile, and on and on he goes. In this most definite living book, no ordinary, boring geography facts will be found. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Facts are wrapped in beautiful, literary language and presented as extraordinary gifts.

Huckleberry Finn type of story taken place internationally. If I was a school teacher I'd probably have this one on the required reading list for geography purposes. Written in the 1920's I believe so some of the language reflects this period. I was surprised by the frequent racial undertones.Would only recommend for younger readers.

I LOVE this book, it's one of my absolute favorites! I bought this copy for my Grandpa's Bday :) ! It is about Richard Halliburton's travels around the world, he is so detailed, and witty that you can't help but love the book and be transported to the places he traveled to! It is nonfiction but is written more in fiction form.

This is the adventure novel any true adventurer needs to read! Richard Halliburton is of the Hemingway era. Unfortunately, he died young while on a epic and daring trip. This book will inspire any adventurer to explore again! This should never go out of print, but few know him these days. It's a thrilling read.

Ever wanted to climb the Matterhorn? Swim in the pools of the Taj Mahal? Find the forgotten palaces of Angkor? Pirates, jungles, princesses, snakes, tigers, and native cultures obscure and forgotten - this 1920s traveler has enough adventures to amaze and delight well into the next century. As a child I found Halliburton's BOOK OF MARVELS, both the Orient and the Occident, and began my own personal quest to learn more geography and history and the adventure that goes along with it. Later, as I looked for my own copies I stumbled across this volume, and have scoured the net and bookstores for copies for friends. Absolutely delighted to see it reprinted. If ever I have the opportunity to really travel, some of Halliburton's destinations will be at the top of the list.
