Where the last volume had gone back and showed us Alita’s origins as the orphaned cyborg child Yoko on the war-torn surface of Mars, this volume resumes in the present day, three years after the end of Last Order. We catch hints and references to some of the things that have been going on the last three years, like Alita doing some kind of work for the Jupiter government, but for the most part we’re blind and in suspense of what’s going on.The first half of the volume is about Alita meeting up again with her childhood friend Erica, who had at some point become extremely hostile to Alita 200 years ago before they went on some mission. After taking a few minutes to reminisce about the past and their lost friends whose memorial they stand in front of, Erica attacks Alita and refuses to stop even though Alita pleads with her to, because Alita just wants to talk to her.The whole volume wavers back and forth between revealing hints of new information and taunting us with mysteries and suspense. It’s difficult to tell what we’re supposed to already know too, since it’s been so long since I read all of Last Order and the events in the middle of that plot line are hazy in my memory.In general, this volume has me excited, intrigued, confused, and convinced that I need to reread Last Order to get my grounding again.
After the disappointing (and ENDLESS) Last Order series I was reluctant to pick up Mars Chronicle, but I'm glad I did. I was a bit worried after seeing that the first book was a prequel, telling the story of toddler aged Alita, but it was really good. And with this book we flash forward to 200 years later as an adult Alita returns to Mars and meets an old friend. And they try to kill each other.It's heavily based on characters and settings from Last Order, but it's possible to get up to speed quickly. It also refers to a mysterious (and unpublished) mission on Venus so readers are supposed to be at least somewhat in the dark.Mars Chronicle has all of Kishiro's trademarks, great character designs, bizarre cultural references and brilliantly staged action sequences.Glad I picked it up.

Another solid entry in the story. Not as much happened in this book, more setup than anything else.
After reading the new volume. I must something. That guy who gave this 3 stars and mentioned something about volume 2 being 90 percent flash back. I would like to ask him something. Are you even reading the correct volume? This volume has a few minor flash backs but nothing major. This volume continues into the future and has lots of action and suspense. One of the best chapters if you ask me. Trust me when I say this. Dont listen to that reviewer. Pick up this one and read it
