4th wall? Away with thee pesky 4th wall! This is without a doubt a true original! From page 1 Grover directly addresses the readers urging us not to turn the page because there's a monster at the end of the book. With each page the increasingly panicked Grover tries harder and harder to stop us, building walls, tying the book shut, or just begging the reader not to proceed. But proceed we do until we come to the end and....(uh spoilers I guess?)Turns out the monster at the end is none other than lovable, furry old Grover himself. Nothing to be scared of at all.Besides being a cute joke there is a bit of a lesson here showing kids that sometimes there's nothing to be scared of. Up to you if you think your kids need to hear that, or need to hear that there's lots to be scared of :)
Great book, was a favorite of mine as a kid so bought it for my 2 year old as he loves Sesame Street characters. Bought the board book because he’ll still rip paper pages occasionally. I’m very disappointed in the size of the board book. It’s about as tiny as a book can get. Yes, there is a picture in the description of the typical amazon shadow guy holding it to depict size, but it doesn’t really do it’s smallness justice. I’ve included a better pic with my avg size woman’s hand. Had I not missed the return window I’d have returned it. Great as an on the go diaper bag book (which I don’t really see this as- I see it as more of a parent read along book) but just too small to be enjoyable otherwise. If it were bigger it’d be great.
This is one of my all time favorite children's books ever!!! I can remember reading this when I was a little kid and loving it so much! So when I found this on Amazon, I was so thrilled and immediately had to buy it so I could share it with my own kiddos. The book is so well written and adorable! I love how Grover is talking to the readers throughout the book; it really feels as though you are interacting with him during the story. And his comments and pleas to the readers to stop turning pages is so cute. My kids get more excited as anticipation grows, and we get closer and closer to the end of the book.I also really love how the message helps to relay that there was nothing to be afraid of the whole time. It's funny how kids will naturally empathize with Grover being afraid of monsters. But in a way, they become somewhat empowered as the readers who keep turning the pages. And the ending does such a great job of giving a warm reassuring feeling that everything is fine, and Grover was silly to be scared (especially because he's the monster at the end of the book). This book was delivered very quickly and was packaged well. It arrived in perfect new condition and as expected. And by the way, the price for this book is unbeatable! Because I consider this to be a personal favorite and classic, I have actually bought it several times as gifts for other kids. Again, the price is awesome and everyone enjoys it; it's a win win for all!Highly recommended!!! :)
I think all parents should be required to read this book to their kids. It's such a cute story, and I swear all kids love it. Its by far both my daughters (1.5 and 2.5 years old) favorite book. My older daughter is in speech therapy, and this is a fun book to use while working with her, I can point out Grovers eyes, nose, mouth, hands; we talk about what he's doing "He's building" "He's laying down bricks" "The wall feel down" etc. The ending is so cute as well, when you find out that the monster grover was scared of at the end of the book is himself, he says "It's me! Grover" and now both my daughters say that on their own as soon as I turn to the last page. It's too cute!
I will always remember this book as a favorite from my childhood, so it was exciting to read it to my own child (who is now 10 months old). Happily, he seems to love it, too! This book directly addresses the reader, with Grover doing everything he can think of to try and prevent pages from being turned. His fear is the titular monster at the end of the book. I remember reading this with a mixture of anticipation, excitement, and a little bit of fear when I was a kid - so I hope my son will experience it similarly when he's old enough to really enjoy the story.
Cute, funny board book that toddlers will love. Spoiler in the photo.
Cute, interactive story that is fun across a broad age group (toddler to young child) — both my 18-month-old and 4-year-old love this book. For younger toddlers, they may not "get" the end of the story (revealing that Grover himself is the monster at the end of the book), but the most fun is in the pages before anyway, the child turning the pages and Grover frantically trying to keep the child from doing so. When we first started reading this book, neither of our children was familiar with Sesame street, so I'd say the appeal of this book is independent of the prior knowledge of the grover character — to my children he was just a cute monster and the story made sense just the same. We've gifted this to new parents and for birthdays as well, highly recommend.
My son's favorite book. Ever since he was about 4 months old when we would read this book to him he would have an overjoyed reaction compared to other books. At 7 months he was getting excited to "turn the page" every time Elmo asked. Now at 9 months this book will stop any moments of stress with him and calm him down and make him smile.
Such a great, funny and surprising story for anyone to read, especially adorable to see the reaction of new readers that are finally comprehending what they read. I recall when I was young, reading this book for the first time and being surprised. I bought for a 2nd grader recently and she had such a shocked, darling response reading it. Great book for all ages, especially the first time it is read!
