Amazon.com Review

Amazon.com Exclusive Content A Michael Crichton Timeline Amazon.com reveals a few facts about the "father of the techno-thriller." 1942: John Michael Crichton is born in Chicago, Illinois on Oct. 23. 1960: Crichton graduates from Roslyn High School on Long Island, New York, with high marks and a reputation as a star basketball player. He decides to attend Harvard University to study English. During his studies, he rankles under his writing professors' criticism. As an act of rebellion, Crichton submits an essay by George Orwell as his own. The professor doesnÂ’t catch the plagiarism and gives Orwell a B-. This experience convinces Crichton to change his field of study to anthropology. 1964: Crichton graduates summa cum laude from Harvard University in anthropology. After studying further as a visiting lecturer at Cambridge University and receiving the Henry Russell Shaw Travelling Fellowship, which allowed him to travel in Europe and North Africa, Crichton begins coursework at the Harvard School of Medicine. To help fund his medical endeavors, he writes spy thrillers under several pen names. One of these works, A Case of Need, wins the 1968 Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Allan Poe Award. 1969: Crichton graduates from Harvard Medical school and is accepted as a post-doctoral fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Science in La Jolla, Calif. However, his career in medicine is waylaid by the publication of the first novel under his own name, The Andromeda Strain. The novel, about an apocalyptic plague, climbs high on bestseller lists and is later made into a popular film. Crichton said of his decision to pursue writing full time: "To quit medicine to become a writer struck most people like quitting the Supreme Court to become a bail bondsman." 1972: Crichton's second novel under his own name The Terminal Man, is published. Also, two of Crichton's previous works under his pen names, Dealing and A Case of Need are made into movies. After watching the filming, Crichton decides to try his hand at directing. He will eventually direct seven films including the 1973 science-fiction hit Westworld, which was the first film ever to use computer-generated effects. 1980: Crichton draws on his anthropology background and fascination with new technology to create Congo, a best-selling novel about a search for industrial diamonds and a new race of gorillas. The novel, patterned after the adventure writings of H. Ryder Haggard, updates the genre with the inclusion of high-tech gadgets that, although may seem quaint 20 years later, serve to set Crichton's work apart and he begins to cement his reputation as "the father of the techno-thriller." 1990: After the 1980s, which saw the publication of the underwater adventure Sphere (1987) and an invitation to become a visiting writer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1988), Crichton begins the new decade with a bang via the publication of his most popular novel, Jurassic Park. The book is a powerful example of Crichton's use of science and technology as the bedrock for his work. Heady discussion of genetic engineering, chaos theory, and paleontology run throughout the tightly-wound thriller that strands a crew of scientists on an island populated by cloned dinosaurs run amok. The novel inspires the 1993 Steven Spielberg film, and together book and film will re-ignite the worldÂ’s fascination with dinosaurs. 1995: Crichton resurrects an idea from his medical school days to create the Emmy-Award Winning television series ER. In this year, ER won eight Emmys and Crichton received an award from the Producers Guild of America in the category of outstanding multi-episodic series. Set in an insanely busy an often dangerous Chicago emergency room, the fast-paced drama is defined by Crichton's now trademark use of technical expertise and insider jargon. The year also saw the publication of The Lost World returning readers to the dinosaur-infested island. 2000: In recognition for Crichton's contribution in popularizing paleontology, a dinosaur discovered in southern China is named after him. "Crichton's ankylosaur" is a small, armored plant-eating dinosaur that dates to the early Jurassic Period, about 180 million years ago. "For a person like me, this is much better than an Academy Award," Crichton said of the honor. 2004: CrichtonÂ’s newest thriller State of Fear is published. Amazon.com's Significant Seven Michael Crichton kindly agreed to take the life quiz we like to give to all our authors: the Amazon.com Significant Seven. From Publishers Weekly

If Crichton is right–if the scientific evidence for global warming is thin; if the environmental movement, ignoring science, has gone off track; if we live in what he in his AuthorÂ’s Message calls a "State of Fear," a "near-hysterical preoccupation with safety thatÂ’s at best a waste of resources and a crimp on the human spirit, and at worst an invitation to totalitarianism"–then his extraordinary new thriller may in time be viewed as a landmark publication, both cautionary and prophetic. If he is wrong, then the novel will be remembered simply as another smart and robust, albeit preachy, addition to an astonishing writing career that has produced, among other works, Jurassic Park, Rising Sun, Disclosure and The Andromeda Strain. Crichton dramatizes his message by way of a frantic chase to prevent environmental terrorists from wreaking widespread destruction aimed at galvanizing the world against global warming. A team lead by MIT scientist/federal agent John Kenner crosses the globe to prevent the terrorists from calving a giant Antarctic iceberg; inducing terrible storms and flash floods in the US; and, using giant cavitators, causing a Pacific tidal wave. Behind the terrorists lurks the fantatical, fund-seeking chief of a mainstream environmental group; on KennerÂ’s team, most notably, is young attorney Peter Evans, aka everyman, whose typically liberal views on global warming chill as Kenner instructs him in the truth about the so-called crisis. The novel is dense with cliffhangers and chases and derring-do, while stuffed between these, mostly via KennerÂ’s dialogue, is a talky yet highly provocative survey of how Crichton thinks environmentalism has derailed. There are plenty of ready-to-film minor characters as well, from a karate-kicking beauty to a dimwitted, pro-environmentalist TV star who meets one of the nastiest fates in recent fiction. ThereÂ’s a lot of message here, but fortunately Crichton knows how to write a thriller of cyclonic speed and intensity. Certainly one of the more unusual novels of the year for its high-level mix of education and entertainment, with a decidedly daring contrarian take, this take-no-prisoners consideration of environmentalism wrapped in extravagantly enjoyable pages is one of the most memorable novels of the year and is bound to be a #1 bestseller.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. I didn't realize what I was getting into when I picked up this book recently. I've enjoyed many of Michael Crichton's earlier novels, not only Jurassic Park but also some of his lesser known works such as A Case of Need, one of his very early novels. My impression of Michael Crichton has always been that he brought a certain amount of technical expertise to his writings, along with a level of integrity, that caused them to raise to a level above most other thrillers and similar works.Reading State of Fear, I found myself confounded by the point of view that began to dominate, that of skepticism regarding the global warming and environmental points of view that I had always more or less taken for granted. Surely Michael Crichton is not suggesting that Global Warming is not a Real Threat?? Can it be??Well, it's not quite that simple, but first let me comment to the book itself. It's a good read, beginning seemingly as a 'good guy' vs 'bad guy' story with the corporate interests playing the expected role as 'bad guys', but early on there are questions raised about whether or not the bad guys are in fact the corporate interests, or if they are in fact the environmental interests, or are they both equally 'bad'. And then along the way, in the discussions that take place between the characters as they discuss the environmental movement and whether or not it is solidly based on real science and actual data, there is a good amount of real data included, for example charts of the warming trends of cities throughout the world, that do not present the expected evidence of a general warming trend. Is this real data, or something fabricated to support the story? The truth is not fully clear until the book is completed and the afterward is read (Crichton calls it his 'Author's Message' and in two or three pages he lays out very clearly his point of view with respect to the environmental movement and global warming, and it is quite interesting to read). He also substantiates the data provided throughout the book, and the conclusions he presents in his 'Author's Message', as well as the astonishingly thorough and diverse listing of references that are provided, are such that I have to feel that there is something serious here that merits thoughtful reflection. If nothing else, it is that afterword, written by Crichton to give his own point of view, that is worth reading. I am appending it here to my review, confident that I am not violating any copyright restrictions since Crichton's own website also offers it for anyone to read. This is a book that is both entertaining, and as well it is unexpected and thought provoking.I am still not sure what to make of it.-------------------Michael Crichton's 'Author's Message' from the book State of Fear:AUTHOR'S MESSAGEA novel such as State of Fear, in which so many divergent views are expressed, may lead the reader to wonder where, exactly, the author stands on these issues. I have been reading environmental texts for three years, in itself a hazardous undertaking. But I have had an opportunity to look at a lot of data, and to consider many points of view. I conclude:- We know astonishingly little about every aspect of the environment, from its past history, to its present state, to how to conserve and protect it. In every debate, all sides overstate the extent of existing knowledge and its degree of certainty.- Atmospheric carbon dioxide is increasing, and human activity is the probable cause.- We are also in the midst of a natural warming trend that began about 1850, as we emerged from a four-hundred-year cold spell known as the "Little Ice Age."- Nobody knows how much of the present warming trend might be a natural phenomenon.- Nobody knows how much of the present warming trend might be man-made.- Nobody knows how much warming will occur in the next century. The computer models vary by 400 percent, de facto proof that nobody knows. But if I had to guess-- the only thing anyone is doing, really-- I would guess the increase will be 0.812436 degrees C. There is no evidence that my guess about the state of the world one hundred years from now is any better or worse than anyone else's. (We can't "assess" the future, nor can we "predict" it. These are euphemisms. We can only guess. An informed guess is just a guess.)- I suspect that part of the observed surface warming will ultimately be attributable to human activity. I suspect that the principal human effect will come from land use, and that the atmospheric component will be minor.- Before making expensive policy decisions on the basis of climate models, I think it is reasonable to require that those models predict future temperatures accurately for a period of ten years. Twenty would be better.- I think for anyone to believe in impending resource scarcity, after two hundred years of such false alarms, is kind of weird. I don't know whether such a belief today is best ascribed to ignorance of history, sclerotic dogmatism, unhealthy love of Malthus, or simple pigheadedness, but it is evidently a hardy perennial in human calculation.- There are many reasons to shift away from fossil fuels, and we will do so in the next century without legislation, financial incentives, carbon-conservation programs, or the interminable yammering of fearmongers. So far as I know, nobody had to ban horse transport in the early twentieth century.- I suspect the people of 2100 will be much richer than we are, consume more energy, have a smaller global population, and enjoy more wilderness than we have today. I don't think we have to worry about them.- The current near-hysterical preoccupation with safety is at best a waste of resources and a crimp on the human spirit, and at worst an invitation to totalitarianism. Public education is desperately needed.- I conclude that most environmental "principles" (such as sustainable development or the precautionary principle) have the effect of preserving the economic advantages of the West and thus constitute modern imperialism toward the developing world. It is a nice way of saying, "We got ours and we don't want you to get yours, because you'll cause too much pollution."- The "precautionary principle," properly applied, forbids the precautionary principle. It is self-contradictory. The precautionary principle therefore cannot be spoken of in terms that are too harsh.- I believe people are well intentioned. But I have great respect for the corrosive influence of bias, systematic distortions of thought, the power of rationalization, the guises of self-interest, and the inevitability of unintended consequences.- I have more respect for people who change their views after acquiring new information than for those who cling to views they held thirty years ago. The world changes. Ideologues and zealots don't.- In the thirty-five-odd years since the environmental movement came into existence, science has undergone a major revolution. This revolution has brought new understanding of nonlinear dynamics, complex systems, chaos theory, catastrophe theory. It has transformed the way we think about evolution and ecology. Yet these no-longer-new ideas have hardly penetrated the thinking of environmental activists, which seems oddly fixed in the concepts and rhetoric of the 1970s.- We haven't the foggiest notion how to preserve what we term "wilderness," and we had better study it in the field and learn how to do so. I see no evidence that we are conducting such research in a humble, rational, and systematic way. I therefore hold little hope for wilderness management in the twenty-first century. I blame environmental organizations every bit as much as developers and strip miners. There is no difference in outcomes between greed and incompetence.- We need a new environmental movement, with new goals and new organizations. We need more people working in the field, in the actual environment, and fewer people behind computer screens. We need more scientists and many fewer lawyers.- We cannot hope to manage a complex system such as the environment through litigation. We can only change its state temporarily-- usually by preventing something-- with eventual results that we cannot predict and ultimately cannot control.- Nothing is more inherently political than our shared physical environment, and nothing is more ill served by allegiance to a single political party. Precisely because the environment is shared it cannot be managed by one faction according to its own economic or aesthetic preferences. Sooner or later, the opposing faction will take power, and previous policies will be reversed. Stable management of the environment requires recognition that all preferences have their place: snowmobilers and fly fishermen, dirt bikers and hikers, developers and preservationists. These preferences are at odds, and their incompatibility cannot be avoided. But resolving incompatible goals is a true function of politics.- We desperately need a nonpartisan, blinded funding mechanism to conduct research to determine appropriate policy. Scientists are only too aware whom they are working for. Those who fund research-- whether a drug company, a government agency, or an environmental organization-- always have a particular outcome in mind. Research funding is almost never open-ended or open-minded. Scientists know that continued funding depends on delivering the results the funders desire. As a result, environmental organization "studies" are every bit as biased and suspect as industry "studies." Government "studies" are similarly biased according to who is running the department or administration at the time. No faction should be given a free pass.- I am certain there is too much certainty in the world.- I personally experience a profound pleasure being in nature. My happiest days each year are those I spend in wilderness. I wish natural environments to be preserved for future generations. I am not satisfied they will be preserved in sufficient quantities, or with sufficient skill. I conclude that the "exploiters of the environment" include environmental organizations, government organizations, and big business. All have equally dismal track records.- Everybody has an agenda. Except me.

For those of you who enjoy Michael Crichton novels this one is a must read. The story is, naturally, fiction. The weather/climate science data illustrated in this book is real-world. Michael Crichton is a master at blending fictional stories with futuristic technology that is either factually plausible, or already authentic and proven technology. In the case of this book he did his homework meticulously and backed up his storyline with real-world data. He provides website addresses and other data that allows the ready to check and verify/validate the data used in the book. The book addresses a current real-world issue, global warming. The storyline of this book is written is such a manner as to give the reader a prospective on both sides of the issue; that is to say the position that man's actions are the actual cause and effect of global warming as opposed to the position that global warming is, in fact, a natural process in which man cannot stop and has no control over. After reading this book you will, more than likely, develop an alternate perspective on the subject as opposed to what you currently believe.

I use to read all his books, don't know how I missed this one. Call me a "Denier" but I have my doubts about man made climate change & this book just adds to my skepticism. I know the time frame was several years ago & to be PC the comments at the end of the footnotes try to make you believe Crichton would have written it differently today, but I don't buy it. When you look at his earliest writings, you see where he was spot on many things in the furture. Great book, lots to think on.

Does for Climate Change what Jurassic Park did for genetics. The story itself is pretty entertaining, but as I read the book I got more and more interested in what Michael Crichton's author avatar thought about climate change and just science and the future in general. The book even sort of transcends climate change itself and becomes about how humans think and how often we fail to adapt to new information that becomes available to us. The book was completed 4 years before he died and contains a lot of insight about how the author thought and what he thought the future would be like. It opens with 3 speeches the author has given about climate change and the environment and they were just as interesting for me as the plot of the book. The book has been attacked as a diatribe against environmentalism, but everything is accompanied by a source or a referenced graph and the message of the work is not outright dismissal of global warming, but caution against the sort of fear induced panic that seems to plague even mundane issues today. The author's tone is quite patient and reasonable rather than hostile or the assured moral superiority that is common with some environmental groups. The book is also quite hard to dismiss in importance as the strategy outlined in the book where every single weather event is claimed as proof of global warming whether it is a flood or a drought is immediately cited as proof of global warming has become a reality in the years since this book was published. Ultimately the book is for people who want to think and analyze their way through things rather than go along with the herd in a state of fear. It is probably the best book to read for the reader to say goodbye to Michael Crichton and his unique style of writing.

This book is well laid out. It is easy to find the remedy I am looking for and it covers so many animals not just dogs and cats. I love the information for birds. My Chihuahua has always been afraid of thunder and would pace or hide under my desk Just before the arrival of a storm I gave him a few doses of Aspen (two drops in tablespoon water by dropper into his mouth),now he no longer is afraid, he knows there is a storm but that's it. I gave him aspen again after a long period of no storms just to reinforce the response. He is still calm and relaxed during storms.

Very useful book to have in your library if you are looking to help your animals naturally. Bach flower remedies are a tried and proven method to aid with overall well being.

Interesting.

Wonderful resource for your fur babies!

Great book. Gives the reader great insight into how our pets think.

Great, practical book for using BFR w/animals. Probably my favorite BFR book for animals.

Excellent book! Either you are begginer or have some knowledge on dr. Bach flower remedies author guide you through every problem your animal might have! Thank you Stefan Ball for this excellent book!

Amazon ReviewsAnyone familiar with the Dr Edward Bach Centre in the UK will be familiar  with the work of both authors. This book has the virtue of giving the attributes for each Bach flower as it applies to humans & then how the flower remedies can be applied to animals. There are sections on reading animal behavior, animals in the home, horses, farm & wild animals, all with case histories, & more. It's a good book for anyone interested in learning about how the Bach flower remedies can be used effectively with animals. I have consulted this guide in conjunction with other books when using Bach Flower Remedies with cats, dogs, & in one extraordinary case, an injured bird.

What if you had plenty of money, and had gotten used to having it for many years? Better yet, what if your family had plenty of money going back multiple generations? What would your values and lifestyle be? This book purports to provide the answers by telling us how Old Money thinks and lives, and suggests that we can experience the benefits of thinking and living like Old Money even if we have middle-class money. Since I'm neither Old Money nor New Money, I've had limited exposure to these worlds, but I do find that the author's advice makes sense and resonates with my values, so I can highly recommend this well-written book to anyone who senses that the treadmill of consumerism is shallow and pointless, and wants to instead live a truly better life. Here's a summary of the main points:(1) Old Money is defined as three or more generations of wealth.(2) Personal reality matters far more than public perception.(3) The main purpose of money is freedom, not consumption. Live below your means in order to save, invest, and preserve capital. Don’t be seduced by advertising or wanting to ‘keep up’ with the consumption of others. Teach your kids to manage money and don’t spoil them. Purchases should emphasize things which will be used frequently rather than infrequently. The general idea is to preserve money so that it will securely be there throughout your life, and possibly future generations.(4) In terms of values, emphasize enjoyment of life, personal growth, learning about the world, work, social contribution, and family, rather than material possessions or social status. The priority is ‘quality of life’, including self-development, rather than ‘standard of living’.(5) Health is vital, so eat properly and exercise regularly.(6) Lifelong education, including a quality university, is essential. Turn off the TV and video games and read quality materials, and read to your kids when they’re young. ‘Education’ also includes extracurricular activities such as sports, music, theater, debate, etc.(7) Do work which you feel passionate about, work hard at it, and strive to excel. Laziness and wasting time are unacceptable, and don’t complain about doing the tedious aspects which come with all work. When working, be disciplined, avoid distractions, and be in the moment.(8) Be discrete, modest, and polite toward others. Never talk about how much money you or others have. Maintain your privacy and respect the privacy of others. Be articulate, but not pompous or loud.(9) Avoid electronic devices and spend more time face to face with family and friends. Eat meals as a family. Have plenty of good conversations, and be tolerant of diverse political and religious views.(10) Don’t waste time dating people you know you wouldn’t marry, don’t marry too early, choose your partner carefully based on shared values and goals, have a long engagement to make sure the two of you are compatible, don’t have too many kids or have them too early (use birth control), and keep your marital issues and sex life private.(11) Wear quality clothing which has understated timeless style and will last many years, rather than the latest fashion. Avoid jewelry other than a wedding band and decent watch.(12) Buy a home you can easily afford in a good neighborhood. Don’t make it bigger than it needs to be. Auctions are a good way to find quality furnishings at low cost. To free up your time, hire help for services such as cleaning the house.(13) Buy a reliable car and keep it for a long time. It shouldn’t cost more than 10% of your annual income, and used cars are often the best value.(14) Travel and see the world. It’s part of your education. When traveling, see more by walking more.

There is a difference between the rich and the not rich and it's not all about money. This is not a think and be a gazillionaire type book but it does talk about the different mentalities those without money have that might be holding them back from achieving a better way of life than they are presently living. Change your mind and you can change your life. This book shows you what to do to be healthier, more educated and a better participant in your life journey.

I thought this was a fun book with great ideas, most that I already knew. I found it amusing though, that some of the old money people we all know, aren’t nice, don’t have good manners, and definitely aren’t very moral people. They also don’t stay married and their children usually don’t turn out well. The book has great advise but somewhere there is a disconnect to the people who have Old Money.

This little book is less about managing finances and more about how to conduct yourself with class. Our society would do well to conduct itself with the air of humble gratitude this book promotes. I often find anecdotes and bits of instruction from this book coming to me in daily life. A fitting companion to Fussell's "Class", albeit a bit more benevolent and less snarky than that excellent read.

How my parents taught me to live-I loved this affirmation of all of the values my family instilled in me. A great reminder of what is really important and what really works. I had just skimmed through a book claiming old money is about snobbery and putting on a bit of a show and put it down thinking "Really? I hope people don't take this nonsense seriously!". The Old Money Book tells the real story about a simple and reality based lifestyle, not the pretentious hocus pocus that people think money is all about. I loved this book and am reading it again just to shore up my way of dealing with everyday choices.

This is actually a wonderful and accurate read. I grew up in upper middle class "old money"...lol. The country club, social set. Not uber wealthy, but definitely like what the author has described . It isn't a showy lifestyle, but what I love the most....concentrating on family and solid comfort. You do not have to be wealthy ! I am not wealthy financially, but do live in tremendous solid comfort.

Written in a concise, witty, direct style, the author lays out the values of America's "money class" and makes a case for why others should adopt them: Education, Housing, Dress, Speech, Healthcare, Family and Friends, etc. I took issue with his insistence on small families; as my personal values place family higher than money. That aside, he's right that children consume an enormous amount of resources.

Everybody should read this book. Everybody should live in much the way Tully describes. That we don't is a sad commentary on our society. People max out their credit cards, get divorced, treat their loved ones badly and wonder why they are in debt, lonely and friendless. Tully provides the alternative. Hopefully, books about virtue-centered lives continue to be written. And read. As other reviewers have noted, Tully does occasionally overuse some phrases and ideas. That said, to think that some minor issues detract from the overall impact, value and timeliness of the book is to think in a way opposite that which Tully describes.

This was such a beautiful book and I enjoyed reading it very much. What a wonderful way to leave a lasting memory of your loved one for future generations to come, in order to know them. It is so important to write these things down while we can. As a healthcare worker myself, I found the advice given spot-on. I know from working with Hospice patients that they do so much better with family involvement, especially in the assisted living and long term facilities. The stories were humorous, entertaining and did leave me in tears a few times. The home photos added throughout the book made it personal and easy to relate to. I would recommend this book to anyone coming to terms with caring for the elderly, anyone interested in creating their own family legacy book or anyone who just wants to curl up on the couch with a good book.

I don’t remember the last book I read that made me cry and laugh out loud! This memoir about a daughter caring for an elderly mother is a jewel. I loved the “life lessons” and “lessons learned” but the stories that compare the author’s childhood to the mother’s caregiving issues are priceless. I cared for my mother until her death and can relate to many of these stories – I wish I’d had this book then. The author shows such love for her mother throughout the book, while sharing the difficulties of caregiving. These stories and the messages contained throughout the book would apply in so many caregiving situations. Plus, it’s just a great read even if you have never served in a caregiving role. Great read!

This is an incredible book! It is a quick read that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. The author gives you a peak behind the curtain of care giving as she takes you through her journey of being her Mom's care giver over a span of 10 years. Sandra exposes the joy and frustration of care giving all the while trying to maintain her mom's dignity and self worth. She even shares that tough decision making process of having to put her Mom in assisted living. This is a very poignant book with the final pages of the book on Lessons Learned being priceless! In this "sandwich generation" that we live in this is a must read book about care giving.

This was such a good book. I loved it. It really hit home with me. My mother is 80 and luckily, healthy and living on her own but this book made me think about what might be in store for us if we are blessed to have her with us as long as Ms Rebie lived. Sandra and her siblings' devotion to their mother was inspiring and a reminder to pay attention to the important things in life. It really moved me. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a short story about family, love and support to a loved one in need. It made me smile, brought tears to my eyes and made me reflect on the journey many people are on in caring for their loved ones. Sandra is a talented writer and storyteller. Thank you for sharing your journey with us Sandra. Well done!

Sandra Bullock Smith’s memoir describes the journey she and two of her siblings took down the caregiving path with their beloved mother. Sandra shares tips for moving along that path, even when it tends to get “muddy” or “rocky,” for example, when Mom doesn’t want to go to the doctor or take a bath. The author does her best to always treat her mother with respect, even when it isn’t easy or even comfortable (i.e, changing adult diapers or, more respectfully, “disposable panties”).Written in an easy-to-read style, the author knows the importance of humor in our lives and often finds that humor in the role reversal between her and her mom. The memoir takes less than 90 minutes to read cover to cover, so it’s short enough that even the most harried of caregivers (I am a former caregiver) will probably be able to find time to finish it.

Sandra Bullock Smith can relate to you the profound and sometimes piercing experiences of accompanying her beloved mother on a journey through her final years and, eventually, her final days. Recently, I read her inspiring book and had the pleasure of interviewing her for a local publication.Sandra’s book Trading Places: Becoming My Mother’s Mother: A Memoir takes you through Sandra’s experiences as she cared daily for her much-loved but increasingly fragile elderly mother. Sandra encountered shifts in the parent/child relationship that were sometimes predictable and sometimes surprising. Her memoir lets the reader recognize some of the specific challenges she faced while caring for an aging parent, but more powerfully, to also glimpse the depth of understanding that Sandra achieved during this once-in-a-lifetime experience.“I was in the hospital with Mom, trying to relax for a few moments in a nearby waiting room,” Sandra said. “To pass the time, I began jotting down some of the things my Mother often told us as we were growing up—‘You’ve had enough sugar today,’ and ‘Yes, you have to go to the doctor, ’ for example. I call these ‘Mom-isms.’ I ended up with quite a list!” As the years unfolded and Sandra’s mother needed more assistance, Sandra realized many of the ‘Mom-isms’ that Mrs. Bullock had taught her children applied now to concerns she needed to extend to her mother’s care.“Mom had a high tolerance for pain and a low tolerance for fuss,” Sandra recounted. “One of the challenges I faced was getting her to agree to see someone when I knew she needed medical help. Since she’d been so firm with us, I simply reminded her what she had always taught us, and that made things easier in a way.”Realizing that the foundation her Mother had built for her children was also going to be the foundation for her to accept more care was the inspiration for the memoir. “I knew my mother would be more easily able to accept what I had to tell her if I could deliver the message in a familiar, loving way. Her ‘Mom-isms’ helped me do that, and I knew other people could benefit from the things I learned. By saying, ‘But Mom, you always told us that (fill in the blank), it was an easy way for her to understand the many decisions—large and small—that we needed to make together.”Preserving dignity while providing needed care for an elderly person in fragile health can create dilemmas. This approach, along with gentle humor, helped her mother accept the help she needed. “I discovered I had to help my mother understand that she didn’t know what she didn’t know,” explained Sandra. “My mother was so independent, so strong, and so self-sufficient, she just didn’t realize that she had reached the point where she needed help with daily functions.” Sandra called on love and resourcefulness to help her Mother adjust as gently and delicately as possible. In today’s Western society, few of us have the opportunity to be closely associated with care of a parent in final life stages. Sandra’s book reveals the surprising gifts and discoveries she realized as part of that nurturing, caring experience. “Everyone should have to volunteer in a nursing home before they are forty,” Sandra confided. “If we did, we’d be a lot more informed about what we will need before we need it.”Sandra’s book is a balm for those who have had similar experiences. “One person wrote me that she had felt such guilt about whether she had done the right things for her parent until she read my book. She was able to see that my experiences and her were very similar,” Sandra said. “To know this book helped even one person to deal with the powerful experience of this process makes me very grateful.”Especially if you know someone who has struggled or is currently working to care for anyone in fragile condition, this book would be a wonderful gift. See if you don’t find that several of Sandra’s ‘Mom-isms’ sound really familiar!

Review

“It is rare to have a story told with sympathy from the viewpoint of a bully. This debut novel, set in upstate New York in the summer of 1969, does just that with wit and a light touch that never denies the story's sorrows.” ―Starred, Booklist“Marino paints a detailed portrait of the seeming gulf that surrounds a person after loss and the surprising companionship one discovers in the face of desolation.” ―Starred, School Library Journal“A lovingly portrayed look at life during a memorable time in American history; it deserves to be on your child's summer reading list.” ―BookPage“Marino's novel brings a true voice to the pre-teenage girl of the 1960s. Tamara is both lovable and naïve, yet Marino creates a strong young woman who is set in her principles and unrelenting in achieving justice during a historic summer in America.” ―ALAN Online“The authenticity of the time and the voice combine with a poignant plot to reveal a depth unusual in such a straightforward first-person narrative.” ―Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

NAN MARINO spent her childhood daydreaming in oak trees and on garage roofs. She did come down to earth for an occasional game of kickball. She lives at the Jersey shore, with her husband (who has long been obsessed with the 1969 moon landing), and a very hyper dog. Neil Armstrong Is My Uncle and Other Lies Muscle Man McGinty Told Me is her first book.

Tamara is a young girl who has trouble with one of the Grabowsky`s Muscle Man. This selection takes place on July of 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon. (It's also when Agent K of Men in Black launched the Arc Net) Tamara's BBF is Kebsie Grobsner, who Tamara tries to write letters to, but fails due to the un/relocation of Kebsie by Muscle Man's caseworker. Another character of this story is Mary Beth Grabowsky. She gets real prissy when Tamara does things that nobody agrees with. As you read the end of this book, you'll be space bound just like Men in Black.

Tamaira Simpson is a girl who believes in truth and fairness. What could be wrong with that? The kids on Ramble Street could tell you. Tamaira's best friend moves away unexpectedly and is replaced by a new foster child on the block. She tries to compensate for her hurt feelings and sense of loneliness by single-handedly taking down Muscle Man McGinty, right or wrong.Set on Long Island in 1969, the author incorporates the Vietnam War and the historic Apollo 11 moon landing into her moving novel filled with characters that today's children will easily relate to.This book will delight both voracious and reluctant readers with its humor and pathos. As a school librarian, I am including this winner on my summer reading list. I hope the Newbery committee reads this one!

Great book I can picture every character perfectly and although this story is funny it also has a heart warming story of a friendship a sad story of a boy and his parents death and a story about a brave young man who dies in war this book may be sad but turns out to be a long story of how two people who are very different that come to have a strong bond

A delightful story of a young girl growing up in the age of men on the moon. The author understands young people. A gifted writer.

The books were in great shape. The hard back was an exceptional value, considering how good it's shape was. I am very happy with the purchase.

I happened to listen to the audio version while my daughter read the book. Nan Marino is a terrific writer and is a great storyteller. She paints a vivid picture of 1960s Long Island, a time where innocence is lost due to the Vietnam War. Marino allows us inside the mind of the main character, a bully, so effectively. While trying to understand why no one on her block sees "Muscle Man McGinty" for what he is, a lying snake, she battles her own emotional shortcomings.I recommend this book to families to read together and understand why bullies may act the way they do. While I do not sympathize totally with any bully, there are reasons, as so accurately pointed out by this brilliant book, for their hehavior. It's the first book I've read from a perspective of a young, female bully. And Ms. Marino hit a home run.

My 9 year-old son said "It's just okay. I like the "Trouble with Chickens" better." He is a very good reader and read all of the books on the Sunshine State reader list. This was his least favorite, even over the books with a girl as protaganist.

great book. a little boring sometimes but was good. i would reccomed this book to kids. I wish the ending revealed more but good.
