Simply the best travel essays I've ever read! It's NOT a travel guide book for the very casual traveler. At times, it can be very in-depth, requiring a fair amount of general background knowledge not only of the history, art, architecture, literature and geography of Iran but also of the region and of Europe. But for the more casual reader, it can also provide a glimpse into the depth and richness of Iran, the part that has nothing to do with oil. For a more casual traveler, it can provide a general guide as to what things should be noticed while visiting even the usual tourist attractions or where to go if one wants to go a bit off the usual path.I have great respect for Mr. Elliot, his knowledge and his writing. My only minor complaint (in a lighthearted way) is how much he writes about haggling with taxi drivers and some merchants over money perhaps not realizing that most of it is also part of todays' cultural complexities of Iran and indirectly a result of economic and political instabilities dominant in contemporary Iran. I know he was poor while traveling but sometimes he went out of his way to talk about what would've amounted to a dollar or two difference in a transaction. I have some good British friends and they all seem to be the same way!! :-)

Not what I expected. I expected more of a commentary on ordinary peoples' views of the current political regime. Yes, the book does touch on that but it is mainly his interaction with the Tehran Intelligentsia and other well educated people in other cities.His historic overview of past dynasties and their contribution to culture and architecture was interesting but not what I was looking for.What does come across well is the hospitality and friendliness of the Iranian People.

What a teriffic read! You can feel, smell, taste the beauty of this exotic place and its lovely people. Elliot does a wonderful jog of describing the countryside and the architecture.

No cosmopolitan musings about the relative merits of multiple swank laden hotels and resorts. No pointless stereotypical dwellings on the geo-politics of Saddam Hussein vs Khomeini. No histrionic rubbish about Thermopylae. Not a dull moment in the whole book.This book truly made me re-think the way I view my heritage as a kid of Iranian descent. All the dull crud my parents and grandparents mentioned suddenly emerged from the pages of Mr Elliot's book, burnished anew to a dazzling sheen. I cannot recommend this book more highly for its insight into Iranian culture and the Persian civilisation(s) on which it's built.Truly a timely and poetic read:)

I actually have not completed it yet. It's a bit of a crawl to me, but maybe it will get better. I am interested in the region and am willing to read it for that.

The "imprimatur" (simply this one Latin word, meaning literally, "let it be printed") ought to mean, to judge from the Latin, merely that the Church does not oppose publication. The "nihil obstat" (simply these two Latin words, meaning literally, "nothing stands in the way") would say that the book is free of doctrinal error. One might suppose that that the nihil obstat would precede the imprimatur, but perhaps these two judgments are independent anyway. These Latin notations are not seen much any more. Books published in English under Church auspices these days included, instead, a notation in English that the book was published "with ecclesiatical approval."Unfortunately, this book muddies the water of Catholic belief. A simple reading of it would see no distinction between confirmed Marian apparitions, worthy of belief, on one hand and on the other hand, for example, natural, explainable defects in photographs taken by the author. One photograph, in particular, clearly resulted from the camera's shutter's being open for longer than the flash. It is not "a profile of seven dove-like figures in flight," which is the sort of statement that prompts derision and, as I say, muddies the water. For interspersed amid the book's nonsense are, in this same book, genuine miracles and sound faith.I do respect the author's beliefs, but he seems to have gone overboard, abandoning his critical faculties. At least, he would need to present more information about certain allegedly supernatural phenomena, such as the three people appearing in two photographs of a scene where, according to his recollection, there were no people. He does not say enough to convince this reader that he did not make a mistake in that recollection or perhaps in remembering when exactly, on what day, the photos were taken. Even if the photographs were miraculous, why should we understand the three people as representing the Trinity, as he does? This question of mine is not to say anything about the doctrine of Trinity, but only about the author's interperetation of a supposed miracle. Caveat lector (let the reader beware).

But on the other hand, the writing in this book is an amazing journey through history about messages left by Mary and Jesus for human kind.There are things in here that will blow your mind and make you ask, how come I never heard about this.Then with further research (now, knowing what to look for), your surprised how much information is available on the subject.A "WARNING", there are web sites that are impersonating Catholic Sites in order to mislead you, so be careful, make sure you are in an approved Catholic site if you're doing research about Catholic Dogma.Back to the Book, there is a mountain of information about past & present miracles and how God have stepped up his messages to human kind that strangely most of us never heard. My Brothers and Sisters, this book will open your eyes.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK; IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

I have to confess I approached this book--and the blog of the same name--with some mild trepidation. I feared Burcaw was exploiting his disability, i.e., currying praise for being inspirational when all he's doing is, you know, surviving. I don't like referring to a disability as a disease, either. It's like playing the pity card, emphasizing medicalization and portraying yourself as a victim of said disease.BUT â€¦ as Shane himself says, he's just a normal guy. He doesn't want to be pitied and he doesn't want to be special. In fact, he's sort of making fun of all that, turning "aw" & "ow" on its head (to "wa-wo," I guess).BUT â€¦ Shane is definitely a talented writer. He's funny and expressive and moving. He has a distinctive "literary voice."BUTâ€¦ this is a good, quick, and gripping read. It's unfortunate that the publishing pros have relegated it to the "teen" market because it would be good for anyone of any age.Full disclosure: I, too, grew up with spinal muscular atrophy, just like Shane. I identify with many of the experiences he describes here. Some of it cuts so close to the bone that it makes me shiver. That's not funny, I want to scream, when for example he describes being herded to the wheelchair section at a talk Michelle Obama gave at his school, separated from his friends. That's tragic!Yet isn't it also illegal to ghettoize wheelchair folks, to deprive them of at least one "companion" seat? I do wish Shane had a stronger sense of disability rights, of his place in a broad community with a proud and deep history. Not to make the book all serious-like and angry and boring. Just so he'd have some righteous anger. His mission to fit in, to undermine the sense of "tragedy" and "nightmare" that pervades disability, to blur the distinctions of what's considered "normal," is exactly what the movement is all about. It's not just about gaining acceptance for yourself, Shane, but about making the world more respectful of and good-natured toward alla God's chilluns, no matter how they roll.Still, what's great about this book is it's not a rant. He's not on a soapbox (I guess soapboxes used to be big, or something). His candor is startling and refreshing. His humor is fresh and infectious. Yes, I did laugh out loud multiple times. But in some ways this is actually a very deep and serious book. At least to me. Maybe that's because I'm not a teen anymore.So power to Shane! Read his book! Recommend his book! Give it as a gift this holiday season! Your friends will thank you. Maybe Shane himself will thank you. He seems like that kind of guy.Even if he never did post a blurb for MY book.

I bought this book for Amazon Kindle and couldn't put it down. I laughed, I cried and have promoted it to everyone I know. My 16-year-old daughter has read it and is now crushing hard on Shane, "He's hot!" she says. Shane is funny and bravely honest about everything we humans endure, but of course, he is enduring it all in a uniquely terrifying way. The fact that he can laugh at his situation (most of the time) is definitely inspiring. My 16-year-old (in photo) also happens to have the same disease as Shane although a milder form. His experiences mirror hers in such a remarkable way that helped her to feel less isolated...she's a rebel too. Finally, as a mother of a child with SMA, I was able to gain an insight through Shane's book to my daughter's innermost fears and thoughts.Can't wait for the next book Shane!

Since I've been diagnosed with a terminal illness, I lost my sense of humor gradually... I became too self absorbed in my own issues and forgot/ignored how to approach/live my life properly. This read has rekindled my desire to live, laugh and love once again! Thank you S.B. for sharing yourself with us all!

I was an immediate fan of his posts, his jokes (often gross, some intriguing - "Ladies") and his writing style. However, what I wondered most was, how in the world is this guy writing a book on his life? His "T-Rex" arms and hands are tucked to his chest and I wanted to know how was he typing his thoughts out to the universe. Then I started wondering all the other "how does he do it's", that other followers have already questioned and he, so candidly, answers.Basically my body just didnâ€™t feel like developing these proteins while I was in the womb. This was different than the choices I usually make... But so worth it. I was impressed by the mix of bravado and vulnerability. This young man shares EVERYTHING, which takes so much courage. I admire his desire to just live... To try to embrace each experience. That is a universal lesson we can all share. The main reason I didn't give it five stars is that at times I felt like his story took detours that changed his voice in the piece. But overall... An inspirational book, an inspirational young man.

Both of my daughters are upwardly mobile professionals, but often lack self confidence. This book is now their favorite read.

I was really excited about this book. I've read my share of witty, in your face, self help books before but this one does it all WRONG. The author's perspective is incredibly privileged and there's a point about mid way through where she says "if you're depressed, just act like someone who isn't depressed". While I do think the idea of manifesting what you want through positive thinking is great, this book isn't the first to suggest it. Overall the author seems out of touch, the books is potentially triggering, and I would not recommend it.

I have to commend Jen Sincero for putting her on spin on the whole LOA thing and making some money off it, or at least making some money off me. Because no one forced me to buy this book. Everything in this book, I PROMISE YOU, can be found for free on the internet, just without the sassy, pseudo punk-rocky demeanor that is really the selling point of this thing. Following one of the main points of this book, I take full responsibility for wasting time and money on reading this pile of hoo-hah.

Hard to read. Writer has a condescending tone throughout. Tried to read book from different chapters and just could not read it. Have read dozens of self-help books during my life, but this one is not recommended.

Complete waste of money. I was excited to read it after I heard a good review. Unfortunately, the author's tone was unbearable. Her comments about depression along with her abrasive attitude turned me off.

Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience sheâ€™s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

Anyone who has read other self-help books from authors likes, Louise Hay, Wayne Walter Deep Chopra, Echart Tolle, etc. and read the book Secret, you would feel many parts of the book content are almost literally copied from other self-help books.

Okay, listen up. I ADORED this book. I subscribed to everything she said. I was literally prepared to go out and buy three more volumes for my friends.Until Chapter 17.About halfway through the book, Sincero begins talking about excuses. Okay, yes. A valuable thing to discuss. People, myself included, make excuses all the time. But she decides to target a set group of people.People who are clinically depressed. She says, and I'm paraphrasing here, that depression is a comfort because it gives those who suffer from it an excuse not to do anything but stay in bed....And that is precisely when I tuned out. I went from loving everything she said to eye rolling in a matter of seconds.My clinical depression is not an excuse. It isn't me being lazy. It isn't me snickering as I back out on plans I make with friends. It's me literally being unable to do anything because my disease is keeping me from doing it. There are days where I can't do anything at all. There are days where laundry piles up and my bedroom becomes a disaster and I hide away from the world because I don't think I'm worthy of being seen. There are days where I stop seeing my friends because I feel like I'm a burden to them.And my friends understand this. They know what I go through and they know that if I need some time to myself to get my brain under control, then it isn't an excuse. It doesn't mean I don't love them. It means that I'm just dealing with negative thoughts and I need to work through it. The fact that Sincero completely misunderstands depression ruined this book for me instantly. Yes, I will admit she gives valuable advice. But once I figured out that her advice disvalues someone like me, I checked out.Also, her advice...is highly privileged. She says things like, "If you can afford this book, then you're doing okay." "Just buy the car of your dreams!" "If you want to travel the world, stop making excuses and you can." Some people...can't do that. Don't get me wrong, I'm in a good place right now but a year ago? I could barely pay my student loans. I couldn't afford to replace the khakis that were part of my work uniform. I ate leftovers for days on end because my paycheck wasn't going far enough. I didn't blame the universe for this. And I certainly didn't spend beyond my means just because I thought 'the universe owes me and will figure it out.' Sometimes, you're just in a s***ty place in life. I was in a s***ty place for three and a half years. Going out and spending money on a trip around the world isn't exactly sound advice for everyone. I felt like Sincero was speaking to one small group of clients. I didn't fit within that group.Like I said, she does say some really nice things. She did build me up for quite a few chapters. But she dropped me instantly and it hurt. Depression is hard enough. People with depression shouldn't hear that it's an 'excuse.' I was highly offended and if I wasn't so far in the book, I would've stopped reading altogether.Needless to say, I'm pretty glad to be done with this one.

As a Belgian I am totally unfamiliar with Aziz Ansari as a celebrity/stand-up comedian. I ordered this book after I mentioned being SUPER frustrated by texting with flaky or pervy guys to a friend. She send me an article about the "Straight White Boys Texting" blog that also mentioned Aziz's upcoming book. Drawn by the strong sociological research focus I decided to give it a go.First off, I was SUPER relieved to find out my frustrations and anxieties seemed to be universal. VERY universal. I had no idea. It feels comforting to know we're all in this together, as Aziz tells us many times.Secondly, the research presented in this book is impressive, while still so clearly written and spiced with humor and clever remarks that I highlighted (I guess I would like the guys' shows) In fact, the book is besides informative also super entertaining. A challenging combination but Aziz nailed it brilliantly.And thirdly, thanks for the advice :) I am sure guilty of a few dating faux pas myself and will take his advice to heart. Especially the part where he tells us about first changing his lifestyle to fit that of his dream girl, in order to finally meet his dream girl (which - surprise! - was NOT at 3am in a dark drunk night club). His advice based on the research or on his own experience can sometimes be shockingly obvious/evident, yet it seems that both Aziz and me really needed to see it in graphs or focus groups to become conscious of it and improve our strategies!Basically, I would highly recommend this book to any 25-40 year old being confused about love, (online) dating, choice, texting/sexting, settling and commitment. I guess that's a pretty big market right there :)

When I read that Aziz had a book coming out, I decided I needed to treat myself.To start, I think anybody contemplating buying the Kindle version should really just spend the extra bucks for the hardcopy, as the book is filled with cool colored pictures and graphs that I think really add to the overall experience. It just wouldnâ€™t be as fun reading on a black and white Kindle.That being said, when I first started the book I was expecting another biography similar to that of Mindy Khalingâ€™s or Amy Poehlerâ€™s. Just another comedian writing a book about their lives in a humorous way while occasionally doing some name dropping of other famous people.Iâ€™m glad that ended up not being the case at all. This book was actually written based on numerous research and study group experiments. Aziz teamed up with a renowned sociologist who is an expert in this field to learn as much as he can about modern dating. All of that made up for a very informing read backed by lots of data and interviews with real people. Of course, all this data is presented in an Aziz way - full of humor in the best way possible. Not once did I feel bored about all the numbers that were on the pages, and I found myself laughing out loud a lot every so often from the ridiculous stories Aziz came up with.Most of the book is focused around online dating and how the current generation is navigating themselves through this new world. Why is it so hard to feel satisfied when there are so many options at our fingertips? How did people even find anybody before with their limited options? What happens after we finally settle on one person? Will we be more satisfied with our choices 20 years in the future?This book tries to answer a lot of those questions by looking at older generations before us and how it eventually evolved to where we are now. Aziz even went to places like Japan, Paris and India to compare the dating cultures there. All of this combined created a very interesting perspective at how different dating can be.There were a couple times in the book where I felt like things started to drag on from too much repetition. But never did I feel like the book was a drag to read, and I quickly finished this book within a couple hours of reading time.All said and done, definitely take the moment to just treat yoself and read this book. If you don't know much about modern dating, you'll learn about it, and if you think you already know a lot about modern dating, you'll learn how to be better at it and then some.

Unlike what you might expect from just glancing at the cover, Modern Romance is not a book about Ansariâ€™s personal adventures in dating, although he does share from personal experiences. Instead, it is a thought-provoking, often hilarious, examination of the evolution of romantic encounters.Unlike many non-fiction books, this is not filled to the brim with words a lay person could never dream of pronouncing. Nor is it filled with never-ending stream of statistical consciousness. And even though Ansari is a comedian, he didnâ€™t feel the need to try to fit a joke in every sentence. The humor is effortless and expertly paced. Modern Romance is the perfect balance of science, humor, and heart.I found myself flipping through the pages with a hunger to learn more, to laugh more. Itâ€™s a quick read overflowing with fascinating findings and thoughts on how finding true love has evolved. How the internet has taken over the world of romance. And how, no matter what changes, humanity still struggles to find â€œthe one.â€If you are one who loves to people watch, or is obsessed with psychology and human nature, this is a must-read. No matter what age you are, you will find yourself laughing at more than one of the romantic experiences shared in this book.

Total Church is one of the best books I've read in a long time and may be THE best books I've read on church. As the subtitle suggests, the authors argue that church is to be radically reshaped around gospel and community. They argue for three things:"Christian practice must be (1) gospel-centered in the sense of being word-centered, (2) gospel-centered in the sense of being mission-centered, and (3) community-centered." (p. 16)The authors immediately nail their colors to the mast, distinguishing their perspective from both conservative evangelicals and the emerging church. With emerging church, they agree that conservatives are often bad at community. But with conservatives, they agree that the emerging church is sometimes soft on truth. This book proposes an alternative to both, churches that are both gospel-centered (with both a word-centered focus and a missional focus) and community-centered."Rigorously applying these principles has the potential to lead to some fundamental and thoroughgoing changes in the way we do church," warn the authors (p. 18). This is no entrenched defense of traditional church structures or practices. I found the book stimulating, eye-opening, paradigm-shifting, and sometimes personally-threatening.Total Church is divided into two parts.I. Part one is on "Gospel and Community in Principle" and argues for each in turn. Chapter one, "Why Gospel?" discusses both word and mission. "Christianity must be word-centered," the authors argue, because "God rules through his gospel word" (p. 24) and "mission-centered because God extends his rule through his gospel word" (p. 28). These assertions are fleshed out with close, but non-technical, attention to the text of Scripture, and real-life stories that show how the principles work out in practice. In fact, two of the strengths of this book are the pervasive use of Scripture and the multiple stories and examples of application. Chapter 2, "Why Community?" argues that "The Christian community is central to Christian Identity" (p. 39) and "Christian mission" (p. 47).II. Part Two of the book focuses on "Gospel and Community in Practice," by applying the principles of part one (being word-centered, mission-centered, and community-centered) to the following areas:*Evangelism (chapter 3)*Social Involvement (4)*Church Planting (5)*World Mission (6)*Discipleship and Training (7)*Pastoral Care (8)*Spirituality (9)*Theology (10)*Apologetics (11)*Children and Young People (12)*Success (13)There are too many helpful insights from these chapters to share in a brief review. But here are some examples from the chapter on evangelism. The authors argue that there are "three strands of evangelism" (1) building relationships, (2) introducing people to community, and (3) sharing the gospel (p. 60-61). Their approach is holistic, relational, and driven by genuine concern for both the gospel and people. You won't find gimmicks or techniques here. In their words, "most gospel ministry involves ordinary people doing ordinary things with gospel intentionality" (p. 63).Evangelism is to be a community project, which means that "our different gifts and personalities can complement one another. Some people are good at building relationships with new people. Some are socialites - the ones who will organize a trip or an activity. Some people are great at hospitality. Some are good at initiating gospel conversations. Some are good at confronting heart issues" (p. 62). A team approach combines the various gifts, which helps counter the guilt and despondency so many people feel when thinking about evangelism. "By making evangelism a community project, [we] take seriously the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit . . . Everyone has a part to play - the new Christian, the introvert, the extrovert, the eloquent, the stuttering, the intelligent, the awkward. I may be the one who has begun to build a relationship with my neighbor, but in introducing him to community, it is someone else who shares the gospel with him. That is not only legitimate - it is positively thrilling!" (p. 62).As you can see, this approach focuses on all three priorities: the word, mission, and community. This is how the authors approach each of the eleven topics listed above.I can hardly recommend this book highly enough. I will be sharing it with my staff, elders, and other church leaders (I'm a pastor). I'll also be talking about this book with friends, exploring how to apply it in our congregational life, and referencing it often. If you want a fresh approach to church and mission that doesn't lose sight of the gospel and isn't just a plug-n-play program, get this book. You'll be glad you did.

Challenging, insightful, and biblically sound! The authors are transparent, vulnerable and honest about their experiences. This book is good soul food and I highly recommend it to all who long to better understand (and move toward experiencing) what the church is really all about.On a different note, I would like to point out a recurring error that distracted me until I figured out what was going on. (I have the Kindle edition of the book so it may not be relevant to those who have the print edition.) The recurring error is that the word "first" has been consistently replaced by the word "Initial". I would like to see this error corrected.

Good book that covers some basics. But the â€œtotalâ€ church downplays excellence? The authors also overlook all of the other areas where churches fail (finances, volunteers, infidelity, just crappy preaching). It is a myopic look at ministry to others in ministry that once again doesnâ€™t see the bigger picture of why the church in the West is dying.

My wife and I just finished this great book. It was recommended to me by a church planter. I am so encouraged with the ideas and fresh approaches to ministry. It is a book that keeps Christ at the center of all we do. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone that is seeking a more authentic Christianity where living life in gospel community is so attractive to the unsaved observer that they truly will long to have what we have. Behind the method is the man. Any methods we choose to follow are secondary to Christ Himself. When Christ forms all our theology and practice the church will be triumphant in producing true disciples who will be driven by Christ as the Master of their lives.Daniel G McKenney

I enjoyed this book completely. It wasn't "earth shattering" for me, but it was a great reminder that the New Testament Church was lived out in community. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is lived out in community. We can not do it on our own. I think that the concept was summed up in the chapter on Church Planting when the authors remind us that "lone rangers" are not what church planting is all about, it's about the community of Christ working together.There are three principles that are pointed out throughout the book. They are; 1. Gospel-centered through God's word. 2. Gospel-centered through mission (action) 3. community-centered. The Gospel is who we are and is displayed in how we live. The authors state that "True theology leads to love, mission and doxology." Again this is nothing earth shattering, but I think we have a tendency to loose sight of the goal because of "programs" that we think and feel will deliver the Gospel.We have to be reminded that no one comes to Christ through a "program", they come to Christ through the Gospel message. So, how is that message delivered.Total Church delivers it's message in two sections. Part One deals with the concept of Gospel and Community. Part Two deals with the practice of Gospel and Community.Even the authors say that the message is simple, but frankly we Christians take what is simple and make it complex. For the early Jewish Community the ten commandments turned into 683 rules to live by. For us today the Gospel Message has turned into 100's of programs.Don't let programs push out living in community and living out the Gospel. In other words, don't loose sight of the forest because of all the trees.Enjoy this easy to read but profound thesis.

Helped redefine the concept of church. The authors bless the reader by reeling in the concept of the Body. It clearly lays out the problem of today's local gatherings as they have drifted into program and human tradition, and away from the harbor of the Gospel.
