Shane and Dimitri meet up after 8 years. They have a history and for Shane it isn't good. So there was interesting background on the two and once they meet up, working for the police department, they reconnect. While it wasn't touched on too much, I got the impression Dimitri was an exceptionally strong wolf that could ignore the mating call for 8 years. Yet once he makes his mind up, along with his wolf egging him on, he comes through for Shane.I LOVE a longer m/m story. Thank you Lisa Oliver! I wish more writers would write longer stories in this genre. . . .The background was well done as was the police procedural, yet I figured it out early on -- Who was behind the crimes. I enjoyed how Shane and Dimitri think outside the box. Their relationship begins and they soon have a growing pack. Maybe in the next book we'll see more alpha behavior from Dimitri and not the wishy washy stuff he'd gone thru -- Like listening to his pack, his parents, his family and friends in ignoring his true mate. Because a wolf alpha makes hard choices and has to stand firm. I hope to see Dimitri step up as the series advances. - Dan's Wife
I have a soft spot for Lisa Oliver's books and this series is actually my favorite. Her stories are not really complicated and plots are not twisted or mysterious but she makes her characters so appealing and easy to relate to that I can't help but love them. All of her books are a win for me! ;-)I loved this book. From enemies to mates, from straight to gay - it was a very enjoyable read. Shane is such a funny and versatile character. I liked him from the start. He is funny, loyal and also lonely. He had to leave his pack when he came out to his parents. It must have been scary for a young shifter to be in the world where he knows no one. I was proud of how far he has come on his own.And Dimitri here. I didn't like him at the beginning considering he was Shane's bully and how he cowardly ran from him and tried to move on. I mean it was his decision and all but he just took the chance of mating from Shane without even telling him. That was a sh*tty thing to do. And the whole hang up about "I am with you but I am not gay" kind of sucked. I was annoyed when he kept repeating that like a stubborn goat! I am glad to say he pulled his head out of his patootie and gave his all to Shane just like he needed and deserved. The crime itself was mildly fascinating and it got me to work a little at who did it but it was still obvious when that character was introduced. But I enjoyed the confrontation! All in all I really liked the book and will continue to enjoy this series! Again!
This was a book I selected due to blog recommendation. The story was full of small edit/proof errors-- for example, Dimiri's name was used when it was Shane doing an action. Also, a pet peeve, using smelt (which is processing ore) instead of smelled. Since this was used numerous times, it grated a little bit on my nerves. Also had bad edits, with at least three sentences that made no sense (cut and paste mistakes?), and one place I had to keep re-reading before I realized it was missing a critical comma. While it was a good read with a nice plot the obvious villain was no shock and some key clues or logical steps in an investigation seemed to have been sacrificed in favor of drawing out the storyline. The story was full of coincidences but the likable protagonists meant I was more forgiving of the lack of tight plotting in favor of great character development. Better edit and proofing could have bumped the rating. The action plodded in some places, but overall, I enjoyed the read and would probably try another book by this author.
I really like the story and the characters in this first volume of the Stockton Wolves series. I will definitely be reading more of the series because of that, but it is far from perfect.I know it is a self-published novel, but the sentence structure, paragraph structure, and dialogue is not very good. I've seen worse, but that doesn't excuse it. The general grammatical errors I could excuse enough to get through the story, but the dialogue is, at it's best, ok, and, at it's worst, atrocious. There are many times where I thought it was a woman speaking, and the two main characters are supposed to be masculine men. I do give kudos to the author for being very knowledgeable about gay sex, though. My only other complaints are pretty minor, and they involve the pacing. There could have easily been more added to this to really flesh it out. The end seemed a bit rushed and there are so many paramount moments that fall flat. I don't want to spoil anything, but there are moments where it could have really been ramped up on the drama and humor, but instead it just turns into "okay, that's cool." Also, the fact that they're both werewolves isn't really that big of a deal. Yes, it's mentioned, and it's part of the reason they're together, but it could have easily been turned around into "I fell in love with you when we were kids, and now I'm seeking you out." There's no painful shifts, hiding from people who might find out, or dealing with the full moon. Somewhat refreshing, but adding a little more to play with the fact that they're werewolves would have been kind of nice. So, my advice, if you like reading romance novels about two men having sex, you'll probably enjoy this one.
I liked everything about this book. The characters were interesting and multifaceted, the mystery was well done, though it wasn't difficult to guess who the villain was. And I liked that it wasn't full of needless whining about Dimitri abandoning Shane when they were teenagers, and that the actual mating/claiming happened early on in the story.
Deny all you want but when Dmitri finds his fated mate again after all this time he just can't own up to the fact he is gay. Shane is on the hunt for a serial killer who is targeting twinks and everything homosexual. When his best informant is brutal killed he will stop at nothing to catch a killer. Putting himself in harm's way might open Dmitri eyes. Can they save each other before the killer strikes and when all hope is gone.....
