The Great Thirst is as long and detailed as the subject matter it tackles, a complete history of Californians and water. The revised edition came out in 2001 and addresses the recent developments in the Bay-Delta program (formally know as CALFED) and important water policy changes at Mono Lake and in the Owens Valley. The book consists of 8 chapters covering the early, pre-European settlement, the role water development played in the growth of Los Angeles and San Francisco, the development of large state and inter-state water projects, the recent changes in water policy brought on largely by shortages, and environment concerns, and the author's summary.To give you a feel for the detailed scope of the work, the author includes over 100 pages of notes to supplement the text, and a bibliography of nearly the same length! I have yet to find anything the matches The Great Thirst in its unbiased depiction of the complex history, water policies, competing interests, and future challenges that have and will come to shape California.The author, an American History professor at UCLA, presents the reader with the single most important fact facing California, "Californian's are currently using more water than well be available on a long-term basis. The deficit is 1.6 million acre-feet annually, which can rise to more than 5.1 million acre-feet during drought years..." The public appetite for new water development has come to a halt given the high cost to state budgets and more importantly the surrounding landscape. But the growth of development and population continues marching on, leaving you to wonder how the final chapter of this important story will be written.

I am slowly working my way through this book. To date, I have found it quite informative. It is well written, and holds my attention more like a novel than a piece of non-fiction. It has help me better understand the past and present droughts.

Anyone wanting the best single summary of California water and the politics it has fostered won't find a better book. From the first people through the Spanish and Mexican era to the onslaught of the '49ers and into the history of our own case law, this thoroughly researched and delightfully written book will inform if not enlighten you.

Reisner's book "Cadillac Desert" is much more readible, but this book is a data dump of the above and more of a primary reference.Recommended if you are a pedant or just like more raw unfiltered data.

The book is well written, but the way the author romanticizes ancient people living in California and demonizes its modern inhabitants puts me off.I do not mind an author's biases creeping in his writing but then he should be able to carry if off with readers who dont disagree with him. For example, I read Reisner's Cadillac Desert which is a totally biased commentary on California's water and I rarely agreed with his viewpoint, but he puts it in such an interesting manner that it makes good reading nevertheless and I loved that book. The author of this book not only makes preposterous statements (for example, saying that the Indian inhabitants of America lived lives in harmony in nature because they were wiser than us) but makes them without constructing a strong intellectual platform that might engage someone who thinks differently.Any new information the book provides is lost in the lengthy and tedious literary style that the author adopts. I am a fairly keen reader, and I must say that I dozed off reading this book more often than with others of this genre.

I was pleasantly surprised by the first edition of this book, which was much shorter than the new one. It is broader in range than any other account that I know on this absolutely central issue for California, and its depth doesn't seem to be compromised at all in spite of its comprehensibility. It isn't exactly lively writing, but it's clear nonetheless. I think Hundley's book offers lay readers a fuller picture of why water is so important in California and the west, and how people have tried to manage it, than any other single volume.

Very informative. It's a bible for anyone who desires an easy read on such a complex subject.

Thelma Harms, Director of Curriculum Development, FPG Child Development Institute, and Research Professor, UNC-CH School of Education, is recognized internationally for her work on creating high quality early childhood environments and assessing educational settings. For 15 years she served as Head Teacher at the Harold E. Jones Child Study Center, UC Berkeley. She has developed a variety of curriculum materials and staff training resources. Much of her recent training and consultation has focused on the use of the scales in technical assistance, and on helping government agencies to develop accountable systems for recognizing and rewarding high quality programs. Debby Cryer, Scientist, FPG Child Development Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has taught in and directed a variety of early childhood programs. She has written about early childhood program quality for more than 20 years. She is the lead author of the Active Learning Series curriculum books and has extensive experience assessing early childhood programs in varied settings. She is currently studying the effects of continuity of caregiver on children’s development, and directs various projects that provide guidance in assessing and improving child care quality. Richard M. Clifford, Senior Scientist, FPG Child Development Institute Research Associate Professor,UNC-CH School of Education, has written and consulted extensively on child and family policy issues with special emphasis on the role of government in the provision of early childhood services. In addition, he has done research on early learning environments and their impact on young children. He currently is co-director of both the National Center for Early Development and Learning and the National Prekindergarden Center. I work with Child Care Centers in my county on improving and maintaining High Quality care. North Carolina uses this tool as part of the rated license assessment to determine the quality of child care programs. What I find to be most common when working with these centers is that they use this tool as a means to prepare for the assessment and it does not capture what happens in every day classroom life. Some of these indicators are not very practical for everyday classrooms, and low scores do not always accurately reflect the quality of care in the classroom. While teacher interaction with the children is a small piece of this assessment, I wish more emphasis was placed on this area in the overall score as this piece seems to be the most telling when it comes to quality care. Usually teachers who interact well with the children understand the needs for the materials and other dimensions this book entails.

The book was in great condition. I did not like the materials it contained. As I was reading the scales, I could not help but wonder if the writer(s) had ever stepped foot into a class or any early childhood level. I could see some reasoning behind the scale, but I could not see the possibility any care center scoring high on all of the subscales. I understand that there is always room for improvement, but the goals should be obtainable.

I received the old edition which it was not good for me. I had to buy another copy with the updated addition at book store because i need it right away for my class. I lost my money on this book.

I have many "Missing Manuals" for all my various Apple products and their inevitable replacement OSs and they are terrific reference manuals. I've always learned something I didn't know about using the products I own. It may not be fair to only give 4 stars to a book I find so useful but I'm hoping to save someone some money as I no sooner got this book than Apple announced the end of iPhoto as we (and this book) know it.It is my understanding that this fall, in conjunction with iOS8 and OS X Yosemite, iPhoto will turn into a cloud based (and much improved "Photo" thus making this iteration of the book obsolete in months if not weeks. Save your money and wait for "Photo".

This book greatly increased my use and productivity with iPhoto. It is easy to find answers to specific questions.

Could not have done it without this book! Easy to follow instructions, lots of good tips. I learned so much more than attending the free MAC classes.

My husband swears by this line of manuals. He got the iPhone manual and found a lot of tricks and answers.

Michael F. McTear Michael McTearMichael McTear is Emeritus Professor at the University of Ulster with a special research interest in spoken language technologies. He graduated in German Language and Literature from Queens University Belfast in 1965, was awarded MA in Linguistics at University of Essex in 1975, and a PhD at the University of Ulster in 1981. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii (1986-87), the University of Koblenz, Germany (1994-95), and University of Granada, Spain (2006- 2010). He has been researching in the field of spoken dialogue systems for more than fifteen years and is the author of the widely used textbook Spoken dialogue technology: toward the conversational user interface (Springer, 2004). He also is a co-author (with Kristiina Jokinen) of the book Spoken Dialogue Systems, (Morgan and Claypool, 2010), and (with Zoraida Callejas) of the book Voice Application Development for Android (Packt Publishing, 2013).Zoraida CallejasZoraida Callejas is Associate Professor at the University of Granada, Spain, and member of the CITIC-UGR Research Institute. She graduated in Computer Science in 2005, and was awarded a PhD in 2008, also at the University of Granada. Her research is focused on dialogue systems, especially on affective human-machine conversational interaction, and she has made more than 160 contributions to books, journals and conferences. She has participated in several research projects related to these topics and contributes to scientific committees and societies in the area.  She has been Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic (2007-13), University of Trento, Italy (2008), University of Ulster, Northern Ireland (2009), Technical University of Berlin, Germany (2010), University of Ulm, Germany (2012, 2014) and ParisTech, France (2013). She is co-author (with Michael McTear) of the book Voice Application Development for Android (Packt Publishing, 2013).David Griol David Griol is Professor at the Department of Computer Science in the Carlos III University of Madrid (Spain). His main research activities are mostly related to the study of statistical methodologies for dialog management, dialog simulation, user modeling, adaptation and evaluation of dialog systems, mobile technologies, and multimodal interfaces.
