I wasn't expecting much from a graphic novel but my sons like them, so I picked it up out of curiosity. The combination of Catholic and animation seemed like it would be at least a small win. I was mostly hoping that it wouldn't be too corny or too over the top. It was neither. The boys picked the book up right away and immediately began laughing, discussing, and asking questions. Sometimes it goes a bit above their heads, but that's a good opportunity for discussion.These two fellows, Brendan and Eric, go through a series of events and meet a variety of people as they find their way to "The Truth". The reader is introduced to some deep and philosophical concepts without having to break open the tomes of the Church Doctors. It builds a bit of a foundation and I do believe that when they decide to read the works of our saints they will have an easier time of it. I should confess that I enjoyed reading it, too. Bring on Volume 2!

This book was a short lesson in philosophy in addition to a introduction to Catholicism. I think that's the reason I gave it 4 stars; as a heads-up to the uninitiated. I am not an educated person so I had to re-read some of the first parts over and over to make sure I understood the reasoning. I am already a practicing Catholic and bought this to see if it would be of interest to my 13 year-old grandson. And that's why the philosophical aspect is a concern; a very young person, or one not familiar with rhetoric might be called on to think a little to get to the heart of the message. Now, thinking is a great thing! But if you are expecting a reader to be entertained and laugh their way to becoming a Catholic, it's probably not going to be that easy with this book. Still, graphic novels and comic books are a great way to grab the attention of some people, and if a reader is used to that format, this is the way to go. I plan to leave it lying around the house and hope grandson will pick it up and peek inside. God bless you, Amadeus!

I bought this for my precocious 8 year old. It is NOT for an 8 year old. (Despite that, he loved it—but I don’t think he could really understand it.). It is better suited for my teens. I also read it and could not put it down. I would like to give it to some of my friends for Christmas.

I can’t say enough good things about this book. My kids (ages 10 and 7) love it. It’s engaging, smart, and encourages kids (and adults!) to think and use their God-given reason. This is a really great, non-cheesy way for kids to learn about their Catholic faith and be entertained at the same time.

I put this in my oldest son's stocking last December. He was 14 at the time. Not only did he love it, his 12- and 10-year-old brothers did too. They were practically fighting over who got to read it when. The Truth is Out There is both entertaining and informative. I'm buying Volume 2 for this year's stocking. Shh! Don't tell!

I loved the book. Filled with great imagination and interesting story line. Great book for kids who may be wavering in their faith. I am so glad I read it.

This is an intelligent, truth filled, eye opening comic book. I could not put it down and kept on thinking of all the people that I want to give this book to. It made some of the things I know about God and the Catholic church clearer. Imagine that from a comic book! Fr. My 10 year old son loved this book. He said he can't wait for the next one. I'm very happy this type of book exists. There are so many influences pulling kids away from their faith. I'm always looking for new resources that explain the reasons to believe. He, however, tried to lend it to a friend who has no particular faith background and was upset that the boy wasn't interested in it.

Grabs were made in the S&L crisis (not very successful - people actually went to jail), 5 trillion lost and stolen in Dot-Com, hundreds of billions stolen during oil futures scam in 2008, and maybe 10 trillion in the mortgage scam and Great recession.This con has taken 30 years and is still very much in play. Bubbles of fake value offer huge opportunities for very complicated theft and changes in the laws prevent prosecution. This book is black and white for some reason! It’s makes it really difficult to understand what’s going on and follow the steps

This book will definitely help you solve Rubik's Cube. People should be buying Rubik’s Cubes instead of fidget spinners, but of course with the cube you would actually have to learn something, god forbid. Illustrated diagrams allow for easier conceptualization of moves, and each section provides a ‘pro tip’ shortcut that allows a person to condense their solving time once they have a grasp of the basics. Even with the basic moves, solving the cube in under five minutes becomes routine. If you are looking for more fun, then the book provides a couple ‘games’ you can also play with the cube.A wonderful book, this is.

It shows the start of the book's introduction - "you may have this, you may have that" - but it doesn't show that at the end of the introduction it clearly says that in order to use this book the reader is expected to understand how to solve the puzzle and actually been through that previous book, no ifs ands buts or "mays." I'm now preparing to buy another book for my daughter so that she can actually get something out of this one. The only reason I'm giving this 3 stars is because while I don't really want to affect it's current star rating (which is 4) since we've not had a chance to actually absorb and put to use its content, I also want people to notice this review so that they don't make the same mistake I made.

All illustrations are black and white. The only colors are on the cover. Extremely difficult for kids.

Illustrations are not color. Too hard to follow instructions when it references a grey-scale photo. Would not recommend for "Kids" or adults.

You can find better instruction on you tube . The book is not in color, pic hard to understand.Sorry i didn't return it.

Bruce Cumings’ “The Korean War” is the first book I’ve read about the war. I decided to read it because my father, a Naval officer, served as part of the post World War II occupation of Inchon, an element of America’s involvement prior to the start of the Karan War on June 25, 1950. Cumings brilliantly examines the history of events which eventually resulted in this military campaign.What truly captured this reader’s attention is Cumings’ discussion of America’s military strategy, specifically our nation’s engagement in a scorched-earth air campaign against North Korea. He described it as similar in nature to the US and British air assaults on Germany in the months leading up to the fall of Hitler’s Third Reich, ending the European segment of WW II. He tells of the destruction of all the major cities in N. Korea. He relates the hundreds of thousands of Korean civilians who lost their lives in the North.The author also narrates the numerous massacres of Korean women, children and the elderly, as well as those branded as political prisoners and prisoners of war. Cumings discusses the actions of South Korean police and soldiers who carried out the slaughter of North and many South Koreans who were suspected of assisting enemy forces as well as allies of the Japanese.Cumings also describes the efforts on the part of high-ranking Americans who were cabinet members in the Truman Administration, citing specifically Dean Acheson, Truman’s Secretary of State. Additionally, the author provides a valuable narrative of the life and importance of Kim il Sung, North Korea’s military hero. Kim was the father of Kim Jung-Il, who made N. Korea an atomic power, and grandfather of the North’s current President, Kim Jung Un.As a result of reading this book, my interest in the Korean War and the politics of Korea has been greatly enhanced. Much to my delight, the author has included a lengthy reading list to which I can turn to fuel my interest in the history and politics of the two Koreas.

This is not a typical 'war history'. The first chapter is a short summary of the battle years, but the book is a more scholarly work that situates that war in the history of China, Korea, Japan and the U.S. How did the war come about? What events, forces and personalities played a role in it's inception and ensuing history. Highly recommend but don't imagine it's a quick read. That said, it is an enjoyable read and it will teach you more than your expectations.

Incredible history that was very enlightening. I’ve got 2 history degrees but I’ve not been exposed to the horrors of this misadventure by our civilian & military leaders during that period in our nations history.

The Korean war was a loser from the start. All wars need to be fought to win. Plan well, equip for success, inform participants and execute. This war was poorly planned and executed. Soldiers were ill equipped and sacrificed without the resources to win. Our soldiers are the best, bravest and they deserve our support.

The author seemed to loosely follow the timeline. I kinda got lost a few times. Not knowing much about the Korean War, this book gave me an interesting insight into what happened.

This book is a demystifying account of the origins, development, and consequences of the Korean War. The colonial legacy and occupation of Korea by Japan is considered and discussed as a key juncture in Korea's tragic history. The defeat of Japan and the very influential presence of American and Soviet forces as a major catalyst in the political development of the Korean society is intelligently discussed. The catastrophic and traumatic experience of the Korean War are analyzed; Cumings rightly emphasizes on the savagery of this conflict(astonishing death and suffering experienced by socially fragile agrarian society)and the rarely discussed destruction of Korean cities after 1950. Cumings argues that this war did not only dramatically change destiny of the Korean nation, but also deeply impacted and forged the direction of the foreign policy of the U.S...I highly recommend this very intelligent book.

Good for learning socio-political backstory of the war. The peninsula is more coherent per history with China-Manchuria, Russsia, modern Jorean states, Japan, and America. NOT a good history of actual military maneuvers during the war. Took off one star. Also the author can be considered left of center, not outright biased or unacademic, but his choice of focus is definitely deliberate. Not a lot of histories discuss SOUTHERN atrocities. This book almost exclusively discusses these. This author meant to correct an academic imbalance in understanding o the DPRK. He did NOT set out to explain the military operations, movements, or maneuvers of the war.

Besides the military history it showcases the u.s. support of a brutal dictator who murdered his own people a precursor to Vietnam and Afghanistan it appears the US never learns not to back dictators

Jessica B. Harris is the author of eleven cookbooks documenting the foods of the African Diaspora, including The Africa Cookbook and The Welcome Table, and has written and lectured widely about the culture of Africa in the Americas. Confession: I'm a white Northern male, born and raised up North. But my first babysitter growing up was/is the daughter of black southern migrants and I learned to love her and her cuisine, which Miss Harris describes so ably in this book. Collard greens with bacon, stove-top cornbread, hoecakes, fried green tomatoes and of course smothered and fried chicken. I ate everything she ate and I tried everything, especially caramel cake, sweet potato pie, and buttermilk pie, although I made a face at more pungent things like pickled headcheese.The author presents African and African-American foods from past, to present, to a hypothetical future in an eminently readable way, and weaves in her own personal experiences skillfully and relevantly. I was left with curiosity and more than a little envy as I want to learn more about the author and her life- how come she gets to visit her African motherland and all over the country/world? I so clearly need a job like hers!Harris ably chronicles such things as visits by Europeans to African royal courts, the memoirs of the Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta, early slave narratives, etc. In the process of reading the work, readers will learn things they never knew before. Did you know that the rice cooking of Louisiana and the southern low country is based on the cooking of Senegal, that yam is really the name of an African tuber, that slave depots were owned and operated by wealthy mixed-race free women of color? These are only a few of the fascinating tidbits Harris offers before she gets into the main course- an African-American tradition of "high" and "low" cookery- the "low" cookery being the slave diet of hog, hominy and what slaves caught or grew- the cuisine we today think of as "soul food" and its satisfying, yet calorically rich delights. The "high" cookery was perfected by black chefs who worked in the service of Presidents, planters and other white elites, such as the caterers of Philadelphia and the cooks of the White House and Monticello. The two threads seldom intersected and were often in bitter contention with each other. As Harris ably demonstrates, food was more than just food- it was a reflection of black politics, black culture, and black identity- what one ate, where it was eaten, how it was eaten and at what times of the day was a political statement.Another plus to reading this book is that Harris maintains a positive, cheerful and optimistic tone throughout, even while mentioning problems such as unequal access to fresh food in poor black urban neighborhoods. She is unapologetic in her desire to accentuate the positive and predict a bright future for African-American food, African-American people, and America as a whole. Overall it's worth a read- I highly recommend it. It made me want to have a long talk with Miss Harris about Africa's influence on the South- some linguists even postulate that the classic "Southern accent" arose from Mandinka slaves trying to speak English! And if you're anything like me, you will be left with an appreciation of the black legacy on American cuisine and a hankering for some home-cooked soul-food delights!

I expected the book to be more about food than it was. Instead, I got a large helping of editorializing on slavery, civil rights, disenfranchisement and complaints about black chefs not being fully recognized. Food and the culinary tastes of Africa were secondary.I understand that the culinary traditions of Africa came to the U.S. on slave ships, but I don't think it warrants 60% of a book on food. I was happy to read the end of the book where Harris emphasized how food has connected African and African-American to each other and to the members of each group. Such community centered around food is replicated across cultures everywhere.The book could use some good editing; hyphenated words midsentence and frequent typos are distracting.

A wonderful panorama of southern life and experience from the black point of view but I must admit that a lot of it parallels that of my white family. This book focuses on food but the real aim is to give an objective picture of black history in the US. I love the anecdotes about shoe box lunches ( like my grandmother would prepare for me for the trip home - train diner food was so expensive!).

Loved learning about the food industry and the lives of blacks as they moved in and out of the food industry. It is very well written.

It is always interesting to find out the history of items - it is very, very interesting to find out the history of food! Some of the foods that we like so much today have a wonderful and colorful history. Even the title of this book has a background of history.
